    Wireless Broadband...

My BIIIIG brother wants to get a centrino lappy and asked me wether he'd need a phoneline to get wireless broadband connection at home.

I'm not certain about the ins and outs of wireless but the only two explainations as to how i think wireless broadband works...

    here i go...

1). You get a device much like a wireless router that plugs into a phoneline.

    or

2). You have an account to connect to at wireless hotspots.

Two years of dis-association with the net has left in the lurch about computer services and devices...so its over to you guys...Enlighten me about all the methods of getting wireless broadband, and please make it clear what equipment he'll need to get wireless broadband at home.

    Yeah, or cable.

Unless you have a hotspot next to your house (unlikely) and also expensive.

Why doesn't he want to go the phoneline option?

It'll work out cheaper than any other option, unless he goes with cable and gets digital TV chucked in too for better value.

Wish the whole fully wireless internet thing would get going, but i suppose there is no point since most of us do have a phone line.

He could always check to see if any neighbours already have broadband, he could make a deal with them for sharing the connection if he contributes to the monthly cost. Then all he has to do is buy a wi-fi router for them.

Bit risky i suppose , but in an ideal world

Stupid question time, how close is the nearest pub? Pubs seem to be the place to find wifi hotspots, and there might be an unlimited monthly subscription starting soon. One of the big US providers is setting up in the UK.
I use "the cloud" when i need access when out and about, lots of pubs have their service. I buy an hours access at a time, spare minutes last a month so you dont have to use in one go.

What data speed do 3G phones gives? Could be cheaper to use one rather than pay for a landline and broadband.
