    My Flat Mates Suck

Basically were sharing a 1mb line going through a router into 3 pc's but im just fedup with them downloading and ruining my ping, so i want my own line. 512 would be sufficient.

What i want to know is how cheap can i get a good 512 connect, not tiscali and those noob companies but a reliable company. Will i have to pay for a second phone line or something?

    Cheers guys

hmm thats interesting, atm im paying 11-50 for pipex 1mb, (my third) so if i can get a 512 connection for 15-16 quid then im hardly losing anything. If u could find out how much it will cost me m8 that would be great

Can you get LLU servies where you are, i'm sure if you went up to a 8mb line there would be spare bandwith, woulnt you have to pay an extra tenner a month line rental>

LLU im guessing is the higher bandiwdth like the 8mb? I still think that i would get lag if they were downlaoding at 8mb a sec... or whatever it is, basically he wont let me cap it so whatever the max dl speed is he will chav it

pay a linux geek £50 in beer to build you a _PROPER_ router out of old spare parts - one with full bandwidth shaping facilities, to ensure silky pings and high download rates can coexist. it boils down to limiting upload raters, and ensuring that small ACK packets always get precedence, especially on high (game-related) port numbers

Don't suppose you could point me in the direction of some reading on this topic. What sort of hardware do you need, I can get hold of an old AMD K2-500 box if that would do the trick.

Me thinks I have just found something new to look into for when I get my 8meg bulldog line .

It looks like the latest implementations of Clarkconnect will have some purty traffic shaping integrated - for now they have some more basic bandwidth management tools.
    http://www.clarkconnect.org/

When I shared a 512 line, We just had to work out usage to keep everyones experience good. Comprimise was the name of the game.

With a 10 meg line as well however , its not really a problem

That sounds really good; I agree with Merlin. You're not the linux geek are you by any chance?

hexxeh is a linux uber geek constructed from lesser geeks in a captain planet style

    "let our geekyness combine" etc.

I wonder if there are other linux routing "applications" like clarkconnect which will do the traffic shapping job on a cheap bit of hardware.

Give me a shout if you need help.

Spent the last year working with Linux and have found teh Asus A7N8X Deluxe sweet for running as a server due to the dual onboard lan.

That looks like you could sort of use it like SBS and it's DHCP and ISA server.

P.S. I looked at it for about 5 seconds, could any of these do that. I find SBS excellent, but just a 'few' too many features when trying to use it only as a router/proxy.

SBS is a fantastic bit of Kit , no doubt about it. Clark connect is possibly the closest here as it does all the routing / firewall duties , but also has file and mail servers built in, along with a web server and other modular addons.

the Live CD routers are best just running the Live CD.
