    Some Good Advice

    NEEDED!

Hello, I need some help on learning a bit about telnet and mac addreses. Links, Tutorials, Anything Useful. I have been for an interview today and it seems i am a bit slack in this area, i know quite alot about just networking pc's together and configuring them because i have done this at home for a wile. But the test i had today contained quite a few things regarding to Mac Addresses.

But finding the mac address of the printer (which i had to find typing telnet from the command prompt.) "it helped a bit on the sheet" was a bit hard for me tbh and i was a bit confused

Please if anyone has a good starting point for me then i would be thankful.

BTW the job is still open and they are readvertising for it so i have another chance yet.

mac address is unique to a device, to conform to standards no 2 devices may share an address, unlike ip adresses. the mac address is normally locked to the hardware, and often written on the hardware somewhere (ie on a sticker). the place which is shady is mac address shadowing, which ie. routers do so the external connection thinks the same box is still connected

If you know the IP address of a device you can use the ARP command which is part of the TCP/IP suite. It converts the ip address to a MAC address ie
    c:\>arp -a 192.168.0.1

    Interface: 192.168.0.3 on Interface 0x1000005
    Internet Address Physical Address Type
    192.168.0.1 00-09-5b-3a-fa-8b dynamic

The old NT4 TCP/IP exam is probably gonna be some use to you - the books should be dirt cheap now too - have a look one somewhere like amazon.
