The phoneline to my house comes in via the front with an extension lead upstairs and unfortunately the study space is right at the back of the house behind the kitchen, downstairs bathroom etc. With no easy way of running a phoneline to it (flat roof, no loft space, concrete floor) etc.
I've been struggling with WiFi for the last couple of years, getting an average signal which frequently drops to nothing if a car goes past or the next door neighbour microwaves something. Despite upgrading the antennas etc. I've never managed to get a stable signal.
Anyway thought about trying a pre-N standard wifi to see if I could get a more reliable signal and stumbled across Homeplug which I'd always dismissed as being too slow. However Devolo have launched a fast one:

Ordered a "starter kit" from Nickknows and it arrived yesterday costing £120 delivered (ouch). Plugged in, and network set up in under 2 minutes, with another 5 to make it secure. However I'm now getting a steady 45Mbps (slightly below the 85 quoted) with rock solid reliability. I have now been able to move my WAP to the network switch in the study and can get a very good WiFi signal in the garden.
Highly recommended, fast, secure and stupidly simple to set up. If nothing else it's a good way to move a WAP well away from the ADSL to a place that will provide a strong signal without worrying about cables. The older standard Homeplug boxes can be picked up for under £20 which is perfect for tagging on a console or similar to your network.
This is in a Victorian brick build house with a mishmash of mains wiring, I imagine in a modern house the speeds may be better.
