Add wireless functionality to a wireless-less router ??

    Hi

Is there such a thing that would plug into a router, into one of the ethernet ports, to add wireless functionality??

Sometimes I think, certainly, in theory, why not? Other times I tell myself no that's a stupid idea, of course there isn't...

I have a new-ish Netgear DG834. Not the end of the world if it can't be done - I'm certainly not going to change the router. Just would be handy ..

    Thanks in advance

    Mike

Hi Mikey, you just need to plug in a Wireless Access Point to one of the routers ports. I have an Airport Express plugged into a switch which does the job.

Yep, I use a US Robotics AP plugged into my ethernet port.

What you might find is that the price of an access point isn't significantly lower than a new all-in-one box. It may be worth getting one of those and selling off your existing router.

Though it can be handy to have a separate access point for more flexibility.

Might also be worth having a trawl on eBay et-al. I was able to pick up a Netgear 'B standard WAP and USB WiFi port for peanuts (well £10). Plenty of people upgrading their WiFi network and dumping their old equipment.

The Netgear was perfect for me as I only wanted to roam the house with a Centrino laptop, and wire up my Netgem box. Probably find that some of the older WiFi equipment is built more robustly than the more modern stuff considering the pricepoint.

    YMMV - Rufus.

    Excellent

Thanks very much all, that makes perfect sense.

I'd rather keep my current Router as I like it so I will be shopping for a Wireless Access Point tomorrow

    Cheers

You've just missed out on the Linksys WAP54G - it was about £20 on dixons and currys sites earlier today. Search for product code 882759. Keep an eye on it though as it might come back in stock.

Yeh!! I saw that earlier last night but was too late. Went in to Dixons today but seems that price is only online. Hope it comes back.

    Thanks
