am i right in thinking that a DSL Firewall Router With 4-port Switch, for example this can be used to set up a home network, as well as share an ADSL connection?

Yes your correct. What is the make of model as then we can give you opinions and see if there is anything better out there, just incase you wanna know
Edit: Okay my bad! I didn't see the flippin link ... personally I like the feature set that its got and the reviews that it has got are stunny. Not too sure of its rugged, blockly looks. Not exactly like its gunna be used as a rugby ball now is it
Just be aware though that, from what I am reading, you still cannot get away from using your existing modem as that product doesn't have that capability. You would need to get something like this one and purchase a seperate 4 port switch such as this

not sure i get u mate - please forgive me if i'm being dumb, but from ur post you've said that an ADSL modem / router/switch, for example the one i've mentioned, will allow me to set up a network and share a connection
but you've then said i'll also need to get a separate ADSL modem/router, and a switch surely if i gotta get those 2, then i won't need the piece of kit i was on about origianlly cos all that has that the other items don't is the hardware firewall??
as i say, this may just be me being dumb (not unheard of )...i've no ADSL experience, been fortunate enough to live within an NTL covered area since they launched BB, but can u explain further
if it ain't broke...fix it till it is
No your not being dumb its a bit confusing especially when stuff isnt labled all that clearly.
Praetorian is right in that that router you specified is a DSL / cable router (not adsl modem router) so if you want to use it with ADSL you have to plug a 1 port ADSL modem into it. Best way to explain it is, an adsl modem has a small telephone type jack wich plugs into your phone line adsl splitter jobbie. That router you specified has no small telehone line jack, only big rj45 standard ethernet jacks.
So an adsl modem is still needed on top of that which has a small telehone type jack wich you plug into the phoneline, and a single rj45 ethernet jack wich you plug into the dsl router.
What you need is a "4 port ADSL router". Theres lots on there they range from £50 odd to £100+. They have 4 rj45 network ports, and one or 2 little telehone style plugs.

Thanx Butuz for helping me on this one. Should have explained it more clearly for which I apologise to you petrefax Was too early in the morning and I hadn't had my coffee yet

Look here for precisely why sane peeps would buy an ebuyer router. Sure, anyone familiar with DSL routers could probably set it up, but judging from the responses it appears to be a throwback from dls kit 2 years ago that simply didnt bother trying to explain things to peeps who dont know which options to choose.
This DLink router seems to offer what you want for £75, but you may need soom help setting it up judging from the replies. The router market still looks the same as it did a year ago when I did dsl support - the cheap stuff simply dont come with adequate instructions and the companies web sites are atrocious.
The same still holds for the better brands. They offer great instructions and settup... but cost a fortune and dont really do much more than the cheap ones.
I would be tempted to go for this US robotics one.
You arnt allowed to buy Netgear as the have outourced tech support to India
Edit: USrobotics one I mentioned only shares to 3 comps, not 4.

the co. i work for are in the process of reducing the number of jobs in my building by 230 & moving the jobs to india, theres a lot of friends of mine amongst that 230, including my sister

Heh, I take it you knew HP would also be high on my s*&t list for the same reason. Not everyone has outsourced to India yet, but chances of it happening will obviously increase if people keep blindly buying their products.Originally posted by Butuz
Who cares. Doesnt everyone do that nowadays?
I would buy Hewlett Packard if i could but they dont make adsl routers unfortunatly.
Had a customer come through to me the other day complaining that he had just been onto AOL and simply been unable to communicate. 3rd instance this month of a customer complaining that they cant deal with AOL India.
I can personally vouch for the model dabs sell for £45
However the "ADSL Conexant 4 Port" seems to be out of stock at the moment.

is was the first point of call when I need help configuring it - seeing as Virgin supplied no info whatsoever.
