Right, cousins networks causing huge annoyances right now.
He has 3 PC's on it, his machine (A), a Laptop (B), and another PC (C).
PC A doesn't see B or C in 'Network Places' but on B and C, A is visible.
From PC A, trying to ping B or C leads to timing out and pinging A from B or C works fine
The router he's using is a NetGear DG834GT if it's any help

e.g. what IP's are being used, what OS is on each of the three PC's etc...

If your running Windows XP, it will probably be the firewall blocking it. A google search will tell you how to configure the windows xp firwall, but if you run the Setup a Small Home/Office Network wizard and enable file and printer sharing, it shoudl open the ports for you.
Yeah, if you can ping one way, but not the other it's almost certainly a firewall issue. Although I would doubt Windows built-in firewall is clever enough to block ICMP packets.
One thing you might want to check is if they're all using DHCP or static IP addresses. If any are using static IPs, put them all on DHCP - mismatched netmasks could also cause the above problem.

IP addresses & subnet masks of the 3 machines would be useful.
What is the result of B pinging C and vice versa?
Are the 3 computers connected via wifi or wire?
Windows Firewall can drop ICMP packets:
- right-click network adapter, click Properties
- go to Advanced tab, click Settings button
- go to Advanced tab, click Settings button under ICMP heading
Here you can see if "Allow incoming echo request" is enabled or not.

All the machines are running XP Home AFAIK
The IP's are assigned by DHCP as far as i'm aware, I also know that it seems to be an intermittent problem as sometimes all the machines can see each other, and sometimes its as described as above.
Machine A is cabled to router, as is Latop (B) I think, (C) is wireless and in another room.
