    802.11n information

"Specifically, if 'Draft N' or 'N Ready' products are released to market based on Draft 1.0 of the standard, they will severely degrade - or even disable - nearby 802.11b and 802.11g networks," Airgo said
    Oh thats great.

Everyone's buying 802.11g equipment in droves and they announce equipment which has the potential to block older wireless networks. If this does happen, I can see a lot of equipment getting returned due to it being deemed faulty when it is actually not.

They also said that there's no way a pre-N router can be upgraded to comply with the final version of N when it's ratified, although several pre-N router manufacturers are claiming the opposite. There are going to be a lot of annoyed people out there.

Am I getting this correct? If my nextdoor neighbours bought a draft (daft?) 1.0 N Router it would disable or degrade my 11g network?

If so then they shouldn't be allowed to sell such products.

    welcome to the radio spectrum.

There is an idoit not too far away from me, he clearly identifies himself as which by his apple airport keeping on using the channel my access point is using (and has been using for 6 months+).

Luckily he wasn't hard to triangulate, and explain the problems too. idoits.

Can't you just change the channel you're on?
Why is he an idiot just for using a particular channel that you happen to be using?

Feel free to correct me if I'm missing something

because i got sick of doing it every other week, i put my SSID to broadcast, but i'd come back home, put tablet on charge, only to find it couldn't see the network. I've no idea why he didn't stop to think that his wasn't working!

Welcome to the joys of Wireless

I had a whole number of problems when I first setup my wireless network so I borrowed a laptop from a friend whacked on netstumbler and then scanned the area.

No wonder I had Issues as there was a few networks locally all using the higher end of the channels 9-11, all broadcasting their SSID's to the world and some of them were not even SECURE.

After dropping down to 8 and then finally 7 I found this was fine, so I've locked the network down, disabled SSID, MAC Address locked the router and the only time the wireless now needs rebooting due to 'issues' arising from my own stupidity.

Hopefully the 802.11n pre-release does not show it's ugly head and the manufacturers hold back till they fix these issue.

Who actually foots the majority of the bill when someone returns an AP because its not working when really it is? If its the manufacturers hopefully they will think before been the first with pre-n

Wireless is a fundimentally flawed network medium since it relies on an already overloaded electromagnetic spectrum.. Ethernet should be used where ever possible.
