Can someone recommend some wireless equipment

    Hi,

im trying to network wirelessly to my friend who lives about 20-25m from where i live. I thought the ideal solution is just to get a wireless USB stick each as it would be window to window in line of sight. Do you think this would work?? If so, can anyone recommend some hardware

    cheers

Note: it would only be used for file transfers etc, we wouldnt be sharing internet connections

i assume you mean 20-25 meters not miles

should work. but if there is a lot of other 2.4ghz noise in your area you might struggle.

To be sure, you could get a PCI card each and replace the arial stub with a nice high gain job and just overpower all other interference in the area

If you get the USB sticks form somewhere like maplin, then you can easily return them if they don't work

Scan have an Edimax PCI card with antena (on a lead) for ~£15

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=152539

You might actually get away with this as you can place the antena easier than the little jointed ones you normally get on PCI cards.

But you could add a high gain antena, again for ~£15

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=197026

USB wireless adapters are also ~£15 on scan. Personally i would be inclined to go for the cards and antenas, but you might be more concerned with the cost than i am

I wouldn't go spending on booster antennas for that range... Its pretty trivial to cover that range with either normal desktop PCI or USB wifi cards...

Check out http://www.freeantennas.com/projects...ate/index.html for a free template that will turn your antenna (bog standard PCI card type antenna on a lead) from a weak omni into a reasonably boosted directional one.

Dlink networking stuff is pretty reliable usually and easy to setup.
