    BT and shareing the internet

    Hello,

I am trying to share a internet connection between a PC and Laptop.

The internet connection is a BT broadband. It uses a BT Voyager 100 USB ADSL Modem

He has a Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster WRT54GS.

I carnt see a way of connecting the BT Voyager 100 USB ADSL Modem to the Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router.

The BT Voyager 100 USB ADSL Modem only has a USB port and what looks like a smaller RJ-45 port.

Any help would be great ?

    Thanks

I don’t know the BT Voyager 100, but suspect that the ‘smaller RJ-45 port’ is the RJ-11 to connect to the phone line, and the USB is to connect to the (single) computer. I do know of several people at work who had Voyager products and have dumped them in favour of (3) NetGear and (1) 3-Com.

The Linksys is a full Internet-sharing Router with a 4-port Switch, and Wireless-G (802.11g) Access Point – but this is a Cable modem and has no built-in ADSL Modem.

If I am assuming correctly that you have a standard BT ADSL rather than a Cable Broadband (HomeChoice)? If so it could be neither will do and you will need to replace the Voyager with an ADSL Modem that you can connect the Ethernet out to one of the Linskys Ethernet ports (don’t actually know if it would work properly…), or buy a full replacement, such as a NetGear DG834G v2 or Linksys WAG354G (low cost options), but from my personal experience you might be better spending a bit more, check out the NetGear DG834PN.

Are you after wireless, wired or a combination of LAN connects?

    Hello,

He wants to connect both wireless and wired. Laptop wireless and PC wired.

I have been looking around the BT site and found this BT Voyager 1500 for £59.99, http://www.voyager.bt.com/1500/prodinfo.htm

Would that do the job ?

You don't need to buy a BT product just because it's a BT line. I have that BT voyager router, as I'm also on a BT line (), but when we got more PCs, I brought a safecom wirless router for about £25. Obviously, this isn't the best router in the world, but if you don't want to spend loads, this does the job. All depends how much you want to spend really. Just look on ebuyer, or scan (for the free shipping), for an ADSL wireless router. Anything that comes up from there should work as far as I know.

any router with built in adsl model should work with BT. I have some generic cheapo 5 port router set up at my parents house and works fine (it's about 5 years old now and i have no idea who made it).

With BT you shouldn't need to enter any username or password into the box as they validate your account based on the line you are connecting with, not the username.

For ours, we enter the username, but the password doesn't matter.

I don't think the BT Voyager 1500 will help - it still does not have an ADSL modem built-in;-"The BT Voyager 1500 is a state of the art Router combined with an IEEE 802.11g Wireless Networking Access Point. The Wireless Router plugs into your existing DSL or cable modem/router to add high-speed wireless to your Broadband connection."

So it plugs into an existing ADSL modem; I recommend you forget BT - their kit is not great, and look at NetGear / Linksys / 3-Com / Belkin single combined ADSL modem-router-firewall-wireless-Ethernet.

The NetGear NetGear DG834G v2 will do you great for only £60 and the DG834PN is better for better coverage all round the house where the signal has to go through walls.

Well on paper it looks OK, but I have not heard of it... it is not 108Mbps ... well anyway not according to the link you provided, which stated 54Mbps. This is effectively older, but proven, technology. It could be a bargain... but often you get what you pay for... so Good Luck!
