Am about to move house and get my own ADSL... Having looked around various forums etc it seems the Speedtouch routers are pretty good (especially if the line is poor quality). Does anyone have any experiece of the 536 / 546 / 585 models?

Tom's Networking has various charts for ranking router performance.
Netgear's RangeMax 240 WPNT834 comes out top in all of the benchmarks.
They are all Broadband routers in the main rather than ADSL routers...
I don't really require a router with fancy wireless either as the only thing that may connect to a wireless router at my end is my laptop (though that will probably end up wired in most of the time).

I recommend one of the Thomson Speedtouch routers.
If you don't need wireless then if you can get hold of one of the speedtouch 510's they are great.
I'm currently using a Speedtouch 580, the web interface on it is great. I assume the 585 model will just have updated features?
I find the speedtouch routers to be the type of routers that you set up and forget about it. Doesn't randomly hang or slowdown and need a reset like other routers I've used.
What makes you say that?Originally Posted by aidanjt
I think your getting confused with Netgear m8.
Alcatel/Thomson make telecom grade equipment.
From what I've read the netgear doesn't even have QoS.
Basically if you want stability & reliability go for the speedtouch.
Speedtouch has recently got a bad name because of the huge amount of trouble with their USB 330 ADSL Modems (Frogs) that are the choice of many ISP's because of their cheap price (particularly in bulk).
Higher-end Speedtouch stuff is not to bad (the BeBox is a reasonable piece of kit) however it can be expensive.
I am currently using a BeBox on my personal line and a D-Link router on my business line (BT Business) and both do the job perfectly.
Personally I would be looking at either a Linksys or a D-Link setup as I have found these to be most reliable under pressure (Bittorrent is pretty effective at destroying cheap routers).
Thats all good, but can't base your argument on one failure. If look on other forums/websites you'll see that speedtouch are well respected, for their routers anyway.
Basically I'd go for speedtouch myself but am not saying that the netgear is a bad product.
Cheers Guys... Think I might plump for the 546 seeing as it includes a 4 port switch... (and I already own an 8 port switch & a wireless AP anyway so should make for a decent setup hopefully). Plus it is available for not a lot of cash

Vote for Netgear, I have had no bother with mine - including upgrading the firmware (wired only) but couldn't comment on other brands. Netgear do seem to be at or near the top in the majority of reviews, plus they are usually straightforward to configure.

Just so everyone knows... The 546 is fine and seems to handle P2P etc with no hiccups. Setup was a breeze and there is plenty in the built in web config to play with

Draytek!. If you have the cash that is. Never been let down - ever
Been looking at a Draytek 2800G on Scan, now i just need a lottery win...my current Belkin wireless modem router is driving me potty, although i'm not sure if BT are mucking about with the lines at the moment...Originally Posted by BeoWulf
