    netgear usb or pci card?

Recently set up wireless - netgear router dg834gt 108mbps and usb adapter wg111t, only on one computer so far.
Problem is every hour or so adapter loses contact with the router (internet goes down, can't contact router settings page but the icons in the system tray are blissfully unaware of a problem!) and can't reconnect. Rebooting router is the only way to reestablish contact.
Also I never see more that 54 Mbps although the 108 option is selected at router and at pc.
I've tried everything (I think) in the help pages at netgear.
On the forums some say the usb adapter is rubbish - get the pci card, but then the Amazon user reviews for the pci card are dreadful.
Also some say use the Windows zero whatsit software instead of netgear but when I choose that option nothing happens.
    Can anybody give any advice?

I am using 4 NetGear PCI Card adapters on my home network - and I find them OK - more than OK in fact..... and have been using some of them for three years now.....

I just set up according to the User Guide instructions, and I do use the NetGear wireless software not the native Windows....

More important than absolute speed of connection is stability and reliable connection - and the dropped connection could be the router overheating and re-setting?
