    Unhappy networking win2k

    Hi.

    Me and my brother want to network our computers. THis worked before with win2k.

    However, he has since formatted and installed windows 2k with service pack 4. I have not got any service packs.

    Now we cannot connection share, or play HL based games on LAN. Serious Sam, and motorcross mania. However we can share hard drives, and optical drives etc through windows.

    As anyone any idea what is wrong?

    Will

    Check the install network protocols are the same, and the IP addresses are within the same range.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    yep. sounds like you are sharing files via netbios ok , but TCP/IP isn't

    see if you can go to a command prompt ( start -> run -> cmd )
    and type "ipconfig /all" without the quotes on both PC's and paste the results here

    Checked nad double checked:
    Me IP: 192.168.0.1
    subnet: 255.255.255.0

    Bro IP: 192.168.0.2
    subnet 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.0.1

    Just one question. What is the DNS for?

    Also, we can net send, and ping each other.

    Connection is set up for sharing

    dns is for resolving names to IP addresses.
    Hav e you enabled sharing on your external connectino from the gateway machine ?

    the client machine should have the IP of the gateway machine as its DNS server.

    ======================================
    My brothers:
    Windows 2000 IP configuration
    Host name: pete
    Primary DNS suffix:
    Node type: Mixed
    IP routing enabled: no
    WINS proxy enabled: no

    Ethernet adapter Local area connection:

    ICS = internet connection sharing
    right click on your external connectino icon from Network & Internet Connections and click on either the Sharing or Advanced tabs, then ensure that you have a tick box in share this connection.

    change both of your TCP/IP settings to "automatically assign" on both machines .Switch ICS off.
    Reboot both systems.
    Switch ICS back on again and reboot once more.

    reboot the client machine and do an ipconfig to see if its picks up an IP from your gateway machine.

    before you do that , can you ping each machine at all ?
    go to a command prompt and type ping 192.168.0.1 from the client machine.

    Thanks very much inded Moby. That is super duper it all works fine now.

    my bro's ip is 192.168.0.17 or something random.

    Yes before we could ping. i read my first post and realised i had missed out a bit. We COULD play serious sam, and motorcross mania, as well as ping, net send, and see each others hdd's from windows.

    Thanks once again!!

    do not meddle in the affairs of ICS, for it is subtle and quick to anger
