    Antenna for Linksys WAG354G

    Hi all,

Does anyone have any recomendations for a booster antenna for my Linksys WAG354G? I'm not quite getting the strength of signal I want when I'm upstairs. (except in the bathroom strangely enough, even though it's not directly above the router. Perhaps vinyl is more wi-fi friendly than carpet. )

I'm not too keen on paying £25 for the official Linksys one, so if anyone has experience of a third party antenna I'd be keen to hear it.

    I used one of these:-

    http://www.buffalo-technology.com/pr...0&categoryid=9

attached to my PCI card as the normal PCI card antenna is at the back of my PC and not in a good position to pick up a signal - its shielded by the PC, the backwall and my desk.

The connection's universal so it should work with any PCI wifi card.

Gives about '2 bars' worth of signal difference when using the XP wifi software, and produced a usable wifi connection where none existed previously. Positioning is everything through - I rotate the antenna 90degrees and 1 bar worth of signal decreases.

Strangely when tried connecting it to my router, it made the signal worse. I guess its only for PCI cards, but it definitely made difference.

    Thanks for the info guys.

Davidstone28, does your router have an internal antenna? If so you might need to try to disable it if you add an external one.

What is the connection on the back of the card?? Best bet is to choose an antenna with the minimum amount of cable necessary for the purpose (as cable is very lossy, especially the small bore coax supplied with most aftermarket antennas) and go for the highest gain, however take gain with a pinch of salt as figures can look brilliant under lab conditions!

i re-used the antenna from an unwanted 802.11b PCI card, which happened to feature the same type of connector as needed. 97%ish reception everywhere in the house \o/
