Network advise, wireless, print server, wired, modem, router - too much to ask?! ADSL

Ok so its a lot to ask and there is actually only 3 pc's...

One by the phone point, one in the room next door to phone point plugged via ethernet and one a floor down over the wireless.

Now I did have all this sorted with a netgear DG824M giving me connection where I needed it but for some reason dropped connections so a mate leant me a DG834 (non-wireless), so currently the DG834 acts as modem and router and the DG824M does the wireless. Anyways when you try 192.168.0.1 it should reach the DG834 but sometimes it goes to the DG824M (this is when the internet stops working). So this is all very strange!

My idea is to go with a ASUS WL-500g Premium 125 Mbps 802.11g BroadRange,USB,print server,BitTorrent. This should work for the wireless requirements, give me a print server and bittorrent . However as far as I can tell this is purely a wireless router and not a modem.

So my question is, is there a better choice? and also - should I continue to use the DG834 as modem or is it worth investing in an adsl modem aswell?

    Ben

if 192.168.0.1 is getting to both the DG834 and the 824 then they both have the same address - you need to change one of them to a different IP address. I'm amazed you can get your setup to work with them both set to the same IP.
As for your new choice of setup, you are correct, the ASUS does not have a modem and you could use the modem in the DG834.

with the two netgear boxes as killie99 says you need to change the ip of one of them. also you will have to dissable DHCP on one of them as that would also cause conflicts.

disable DHCP on the 824 and it should just act as a wap, assign it to 192.168.1.1 or something along those lines, and it should be fine

thanks for the advice guys, I already had DCHP disabled on the 824M so that it wouldnt act as a modem.

The DG834 takes priority on 192.168.0.1 and the DG824M is therefore unaccessable until whatever crashes and it defaults to the DG824M.

you also need to set the DG824M to have a different ip address. you cant have two things on the network with the same ip. its like having 2 houses with the same phone number.

I would advise against having them on different subnets, set the 824 as 192.169.0.10

Thanks for the advise guys, the WL-500gP looks like a fantastic buy, lots of projects supporting it and good forums too
