Is there an ADSL modem that can stabilise a signal into the house?

    Hi,
I've got a mate who lives in the middle of nowhere and is at the limits of the exchange (6-7km). And every time it rains heavily or during unpleasant weather the connection just drops out. The line is only a 1meg effort so not trying for 8meg adslmax.

He can't have NTL installed as it's miles from a main road, BT won't look at the problem as they only provide the voice, the ISP is crap and just won't argue this with BT. So is there a modem on the market that can stabilise the signal from the line to the house so that if it rains the connection is maintained? I know it's a long shot but if anyone knows of something which can claim to help I’ll be interested.

    Regards all

Surely a Router would be the way to go as it would reconnect if/when the connection drops???

I live in a rural area as well and this is a real issue for many people. It may be worth moving to a better ISP as I have heard that many problems are contention issues - ie the ISP drops the user's connection.

Good luck - lack of reliable Broadband is infuriating

Hi there, unfortunalty the connection drops for hours to days! not minutes and the yes a modem/router - that can strengthen the signal might help, if they exsist

The Speedtouch series - e.g. the 546 is commonly recommended for use on low quality/unstable lines. There's an unofficial utility called "DMT Tool" which lets you tweak the router for best performance over bad lines.

I suggest you do some reading on the ADSLGuide DSL Hardware forums where there's plenty of discussion on these routers and other solutions for bad lines.

BT provide the line so if it is affecting the connection surely they need to look at it - the ISP is providing the connection but not the line that it is carried on....

Been at BT for years apparently as they only provide for voice that's what you get. The ISP should talk to BT about the problem but no that does not happen either.
