    email smtp server

    Just a quick question:

Currently my parents and I have our own email pop3 email accounts, but soon we're changing ISP we're just going to have one, which means just one mailbox. (not ideal!)

My question is, Can they keep their old account and address? Set outlook to use their old pop3 server to recieve their mail from the old isp but the new ISP's smtp server to send (still with their old address) Will that work using their old account and address?

    did that all make sense?????

Providing the account doesn't get deleted, yes! I'm still using an old ukgateway.net email address from an account I haven't used (dialled in) for at least four years. Some providers will delete your account however - I think Freeserve claims to. You'll need to post the provider.

Okay, no thats cool... its currently BT openworld, and its going to be downgraded to BT pay as you go or something when i change, so they shouldn't delete it...... I hope!

be carefull, some of the BT pay as you go accounts wont actually allow pop3 access ( you have to use their webmail )

this happened to my old btinternet account a couple of years back

the other scenario i've had is that they'll let you check you're mail, but not actually send from that address.

you could always get a yahoo or hotmail account and keep your parents away from your own mail.

Ye, thats what I was hoping to eliminate by using my new ISP's smtp.... It seems to work at the moment with my old freeserve account. after playing around I have found I can send mail using my freeserve address and details through BT's smtp and receive through fresserve's POP3. I hope to do the same when I change ISP with my BT account

that will work fine , its just because BT's and Freeserves SMTP relays are locked down by IP. ie if you aint on a freeserve IP , you wont be able to use their server

as long as you dont loose your pop3 account you'll be fine

I was on BT Openworld Pay As You Go for a couple of months wile I was waitingon ADSL being installed in exchange (pre-ordered it so BT gave me an account so it was all set to go) and I could have up to 5 or so seperate accounts which all had POP3 access....
