v1.1 WRT54G running hyperwrt thibor15c
It's on a fairly large network (8 PCs, 2 XBoxes, X360 and 3 DSs) but the network isn't hammered all that much. We're on a 10Mb Telewest line and at least once a day the router has to be hard reset because it's just died. Any ideas on how to resolve this and if it involves a new router what would you recommend. Wireless is a must really unless I can use any of the current routers on the network as an access point (WRT54G v1.1 and a USR8054).

The reason I switched over to thibor was because of these issues
One thing to try before you maybe consider purchsing a replacement , is to check if it is perhaps over-heating. Can you stand it on it's end rather than flat, and/or point a fan at it to see if additional cooling helps? crashing through overheating is not an uncommon problem, and worth checking out IMHO.

Will do mate, it'd certainly not in an ideal location but it is only 19 degrees in the room (probably not very uniform though).
Will try it on its side until it crashes again then most likely come back here to whinge
Well it worked for me with my old NetGear DG824G, which started to exhibit similar problems, but stabalised when I gave it extra coolong.
I replaced it with a NetGear DG824PN (which comes with a stand that supports it on its side edge so the router is standing vertically..... I wonder why?) This new router is rock solid - and has been for 8 or 9 months, and if you need to change I thoroughly recommend it.
Draytec are reputedly the best, but they cost more.....

Try reflashing the firmware - this often clears up problems on cheaper routers (netgear, linksys). I've been through many netgear, linksys etc routers - they all 'cook' themselves eventually, particularly if you're using them heavily. I made a decision to go for something decent a few months back and got a DrayTek 2800V and the difference is (frankly) amazing - it all just 'works' without fuss (UPnP actually works! woot!) or reboots (ever time you change a setting). Yes they cost a little more but I'd never go back to the 'dark days' of netgear.

I can also vouch for the DG824PN and also the earlier incarnations have distributed about 10 to different users homes and all work great.
Try the standing on its side Cisco I have had in the past suffered the same and they own Linksys (i think, can't keep up...!)

I had to reboot my Linksys WAG54G quite often, the wireless would lock up when transferring files over 500Mb. Eventually the 4-port switch broke so I had to buy another router.
I bought a 3Com OfficeConnect wireless ADSL router and have been very pleased with it, you can read more about it here on my blog:

Use your custom firmware to underclock it to see if it is an overheating issue - when I was using wrts and OpenWRT there were a lot of folks adding fans because of this sort of problem

yep i seen this aswell, netgear routers are well known for there heat issues mine was terrible in the summer not as bad as some but not acceptable now its fine, i guess those temperatures we had in summer didnt help things i have the wgt634u, if possible put it on a nice cool place and not covered or on top of anything hot should help you a bitOriginally Posted by Gerschwin

Well it lasted a while and then last night it shut off again, it wasn't even warm when this happened.
