    How do you do it?

How do you manage to give your little ones medicine when they are ill ?

Hayden has a gob like a vice clamp and has a knack in that she knows when it's coming and clamps her gob shut so tight, the only way I can give her the amoxycillin she's got for a bad ear infection is to get a syringe and coax her into laughing before firing it into her mouth.

As you can imagine, it's going all over the place and is causing much fun trying to get her to take her medicine and get better

Not a parent, but my lil bro when he was younger was the same, we used to mix it up with a drink and he was fine with it that way, tastes better also,.

Re: How do you do it?

Have you tried subterfuge yet? I guess age is fairly crucial as to how you can aim that one, but I don't know... whatever age we're talking, having chemicals fired into your mouth with a syringe does sound fairly freaky, no matter how much you trust the person doing it.

Speaking from the other end of this, my parents used to con me with crafty lies... instead of "take this tablet", it was someone pretending to eat sweets, and then when I went over and asked for one, I was told that it tasted best if you didn't chew it.

Obviously that doesn't work more than once if it tastes revolting, but I seem to remember most of the medicines I had as a kid tasting really nice... especially the banana milkshake for ear infections and one particular brand of calpol

    What's the amoxycillin stuff like?

Re: How do you do it?

Jack quite likes his medicine so it's quite easy! (lucky us!) I think just relaxing & not making a big deal of it helps. At that age I think we used the syringe and just prayed!

Anyway, amoxycillin....mmmmmm...I'd drink the stuff if they sold it in cans! Smells amazing!

I knew she was young but didn't realise she was only 9 months! For some reason it feels much longer, no idea why.

Hmm. Maybe speak to NHS direct about mixing it in with something else? If there's something she likes that'll take away the taste then that might do the trick.

why not mix it into a bit of babyfood? then feed it on the normal babyfood spoon... she won't even know it's medicine! Mash up a 'nana or something?

Another vote for mixing it juice, or using a baby syringe.

Re: How do you do it?

We tried with mixing it into her porridge, she got wise to that quite quickly and would only eat from the side that didn't have it in.... Now we just use the syringe and give her a little bit at a time. Oral meds are easy anyway - try eye drops

Re: How do you do it?

Hold their nose until they open their mouth to breath. Jam the syringe in and let them breathe before firing away. If you tilt them at 45 degrees they can't spit it back out.

At nine months they don't even realise that they are a person themselves so in 5 minutes they aren't going to hold it gainst you.

BTW I thought Hayden was a German boys name?

Oh she managed to get it on the wall, floor and TV yesterday but none stayed in her gob for longer than 10 secs lol

Yeah, it's funny to see her be in a mood with me as I'd move 1 of her toys etc and then come back into the room 10 mins later only to be greeted by " daaaadaaaa" and her hugging my leg until I pick her up.

My missus watched Heroes 1 day and saw Hayden Panttototototeria or however it's spelt and though it was nice and unusual to be used for a girl. Cut forward to 4 months later and we sort of agreed on it just after her birth. My mates keep joking about getting her a cheerleading outfit for her birthday

Re: How do you do it?

Does she have a dummy? My sister swore by those dummy medicine things that you can get from chemists. You just stick the medicine in the dummy when they are using it to get off to sleep and they suck it through a small hole.

We stick to the "pin the head down and wait for her to cry" technique to get medincine in our little one most of the time. Although depending on her mood she will quite happily take it from a syringe or spoon. Another technique the doctor told me use to use half the dose twice as often, although that was with Calpol, you might want to check that this can apply to antibiotics as well.

Our childminder also taught us to squirt it into her cheek rather than into her mouth as it's less easy to spit it all back out.

We just squirt it in whenever he opens his mouth. He is teething at the moment and bringing home a new bug every week from nursery so he has been on the recieveing end of quite a bit of calpol! As an aside, because of him and nursery I am sick all of the time! I have had 2 courses of antibiotics for nasty upper respiratory tract infections since he started. I used to be healthy!

Another vote for the medicine dummy if you are having trouble.

We have never had this as Emma has been on Medicine for reflux since she was a few weeks old. She just thinks it is food, she actively opens her mouth and then goes 'mmmmmm' afterwards!

Re: How do you do it?

Well I can report that she's now taking it all without any hassle after the first few days.

She was actually making 'nom nom nom' sounds last night with the amoxycillin and we gave it her on a spoon without any fighting or complaining this time.
