What to do?

I'm looking to replace my 6400 Geil Ultra (4*512mb) either with:

2*1gb Corsair 8500 55515

OR

4*1gb Corsair 6400 55515

I'm using vista at the moment, but I'm not sure what to do. The Geil I have is supposed to do 44412 but only does 55518. I'd like to make use of vistas pre-fetch feature. Also games like BF2142 really struggle with alt tabbing in vista, not sure if that's memory though.

Do you notice the difference between 4-4-4-12 and 5-5-5-18 .. your not really supposed to with C2D chips.
And I'd RMA that RAM if it truely wont do 4-4-4-12 ...mine defaults to 5-5-5-18 but you can change it in the bios.

I know me again. I'm just so indecisive. One thing is, I run my E6300 at 2.8 and don't really want to go further - so spending £240 on 8500 seems silly as really I'd probably notice more with 4gb.

Once you use vista you'll see the benefit.

The only place which has stock of the RAM is ocuk, damn

I think I'll go for the corsair at £133 from scan.

I'd probably have the 4GB but i dont think you'll notice a difference.

It's really a bit of futureproofing. As 2gb is sweet for XP 4 will be sweet for vista. I'm getting it while it's cheap tbh.

Yeah I considered 4GB for vista but it seems to run nice (from what i've seen) on 2 at the moment. I will wait a bit but you are right to get it at the moment as it is dirt cheap.
