PC cant POST - nothing on screen, no beeps, nothing :(

I was playing cs the other night, when all of a sudden, it froze, no sound loop or anything, i just mean everything froze. So i hit the reset button, and nothing, not a single bleep, nothing on screen. My computer has NEVER done this before, and at the time of it freezing, it wasnt being overclocked in any way. And it still wont POST or anything, what to do

I have tried to re-seat the ram, i've swapped the vid card to see if it was that, i've tried unplugging all my ide/sata devices but still to no avail. I even tried clearing the CMOS and still nothiing has happened

I still get everything power up like normal, i.e. the fans all come on, my hard drives make that spin up noise etc, nothing appears to struggle. None of the components are older than a year, what could be the problem? The PSU is an enermax so i doubt its that. I was thinking maybe something has shorted the motherboard but my computer has been sitting still with the case unopened for months i hardly think something could have suddenly caused it to short.

Any ideas? I really dont want to replace the CPU as its a real hassle with the whole prometeia thing with sealie string etc, and i really hope it isnt the motherboard

have u tried another stick of ram to the one u have? as 50% of the time its ram problems if the rest of the system switch's on

good to see u joined the forum anyways

well the thing is if it was a bad stick of ram i'd get a beep saying theres a problem with ram, or if the ram was bad enuf to not register its own existence then the computer would beep and say theres no ram, and as i had two sticks, i tried each one of them on their own anyway but to no avail.

I really hope it isnt the CPU or mobo , tho its starting to look that way...

just that i have had ram problems and the mobo makes no sound at all to indicate it was ram

i guess maybe take the mobo out the case and test it without being on any posts.

bets its a pain. good luck

best bet is as scupa says, take it out of the case, and unplug everything (apart from essentials - Ram, GFX card (unless you have onboard then use that), fire it up, and see whats happening.

    Could it be condensation?

Couls it be anything shorting, (eg a tiny bit of conductive material wire has gone ine through your fan vents, and crossed two tracks.

Take it all out, and make sure its all dust free (use compressed air or something), and try it again.

To be fair, its a hassle, but what have you got to lose. at the moment its next to useless, so you may as well give it a go

a similar thing has happened to me. when i turn on the computer fan spins, cd drive reads etc and stays on but the monitor gets no signal WHATSOEVER from the computer (shuttle)

i took the motherboard and everything out to see if it was shorting but still didnt work

    would appreciate some help.

    cheers

Can I ask, are you using an NF7-S?

I've had this exact situation twice this year; PC perfectly stable, no problems, then suddenly dies, for no reason.

Just went dead on me, no POST or anything, just the fans turning and the drive lights coming on when I power up.

Both times if was the motherboard giving up on me.

Suggest to both of you that you get hold of another motherboard and try it with your RAM, CPU and graphics card in that board.

It doesn't have to be a short, the board could be a gonna. Try it out.

ahh i forgot, maybe i should put my spec here:

    P4 3.0C
    ASUS P4C800E-Deluxe
    Coolermaster 110 Case
    Prometeia Mach II Base Unit

the motherboard is a good one so i really doubt it could be that, unless the BIOS chip got damaged. I'm not sure if clearing the CMOS would do anything to the bios chip though..

I dont think it is condensation because i made an extra special effort to seal up the cpu, i put twice as much sealie string on as directed, and put loads of extra on top where there was even the slightest possible chance moisture could get in.

This problem really did happen out of the blue it was the most spontaneous thing ever, the metal contact story sounds reasonable but the thing is most of the motherboard is covered in that protective green layer anyway, so unless 2 pins are actually shorted i doubt its that

basically what i'm looking for is any other thing it could be before i have to spend 2 hours taking the damn thing apart and wasting more of my thermal grease (which i think i might have run out of anyway).

    Any alternatives?

oh yeah also i have the temperature reading on my prometeia, which goes to like -52 straight away, which means no power is going through the CPU, which cannot be a good sign
