Upgrading to dual core

hey all, im planning to upgrade to dual core, i have picked some components and was wondering if they will work together or if i could get better for my money.

specs

AMD AM2 Athlon 64 5200+
Abit NF-M2 nView WiFi
2Gb (2X1Gb) Corsair TwinX XMS2
250 Gb Western Digital WD2500KS Caviar SE16

620W Corsair HX Series Modular SLi PSU
or 600W Silverstone Strider ST60F

also wondering which of the psu's would be better as i plan to buy a 8800GTS in a few weeks.

i choose a matx cause i want to keep using my silverstone sg01.

yes they will work but whats the cost as you may be able to get c2d for similar money and it would be faster

and i'd buy the corsair those psu's are really good

How much does your budget allow for a processor?

processor bugdet is £100 - £150

I'd probably swap the mobo and cpu to a core 2 duo then.

Perhaps an E4300 or E6300 and then overclock as they will exeed the performance of a 5200+ without breaking a sweat.

i was going to go core 2 duo but i thought with the small case and i use a silverstone nt06 that it would get very hot if i had to overclock.

The abit motherboard i have heard people have been having problems with it, dont know all the facts.

Is there another matx motherboard that would be good for gaming and overclocking.

i thought it was mostly the fatality fp-in9 sli that was the problem (i have one)

and generally core2duo runs pretty cool with a half decent fan on some people do 30-405 overclocks on the stock fan with not heat issues


although that p5b is way better

I like the fatality but the pb5 will be good to.

You most likely wont have problems with heat even with high overclocks. Mine never goes over 50 degrees clocked as it is with an arctic freezer 7 but you can get pretty decent low profile coolers if your case is too small.

The low end core 2 duo's keep up with the better amd's even with stock settings so it will only take light overclocking to have it performing better than the amd.

for Small PC's a COre2 Duo is prolly best, and it's faster too.

Much as this AMD Fanboih is pained to admit it ... C2D is quicker than AMD

E6400 and, although i am going for a Zalman (on order), my temps never exceed 47 degrees under load.

Aren't the new C2D's out in 2 weeks, may be worth waiting as there is bound to be a price drop.
