If you have enough money you could buy an athlon 64 processor. The best one would be the athlon 64 3000+ I believe it is identical to the a64 3200+ except it has 512 KBs of L2 Cache and retails for $378 AUD (very cheap!). The A64 3000+ is cheaper and faster than the 32 bit athlon 3200+ (AMD has gone insane). The A64 3200+ has around 1 megabyte of L2 cache. So the A64 3000+ is a crippled version A64 3200+. but the A64 3000+ has an excellent price .

^^ Might help you a bit. I'd personally go with Intel, HT is your friend

For original poster, if you actually "use" your PC, i.e. games and work instead of spending time finding the best benchmark performance , then AMD is your route. Otherwise, for benchmarking frenzy's and other un-noticeable real world performance gains , Intel

    ROFL!

    Now that WOULD be different.

Let me ask this. If AMD's FSB was pumped to 800mhz, the same as Intel, and AMD had a clock speed (forget their crappy XP stuff) of 3.0GHz, who would win?

I think we all know the answer. AMD would.

Could some one answer me a question? Which is cooler running a P4 2.8ghz or AMD 3000+?

Totally depends on the cooler mate. The P4 probably puts out a little bit more heat at full load, but the difference is probably not significant.

See the main problem is when people buy a new pc the look at MHZ and see 3.2 p4 and then see a 1.8 Mhz Barton ( 2500+) and say " THE P4 HAS to be like twice as fast because of the Mhz diffrence" but thats not always the case. It you dont have a budget and the skys the limit go with the intel. If you are on a budget and want a good all around computer go with AMD.. if you on a budget and go with intel your gonna screw yourself, you gonna end up getting a crappy video card or crappy ram and all of games will still run like Sh**.
    Happy New Year

The price difference between a P4 2.8ghz (HT 800) and 3000+ is only about £20 would i really be shooting myself in the foot? especially since the P4 comes with cooler that seems to be generally liked and the AMD with nothing. My last 4 CPUs have been AMDs (K6-2 350mhz@400, Ath 850, 1600+, 2000+) all have been fine, but I'm not adverse to giving the other guy a try if HT is any good.

    Lightbulb

Buy a 2500 running @ 11x 166, change fsb to make it run 11x 200, go I got an XP3200+. Then spend almost £100 pound savings on whatever you like

Sorry knock knock but I'm a silent computer fan now, overclocking is a thing of the past for me, if anything I may become an underclocker.

Trust me if you go Barton you will only spend more money for the same thing if you get anything more than an xp2500. Stock volts overclock = something for nothing (including noise levels)
