not if the games are based on opengl rather then directx then they actually run faster in linux then windows and the beauty of linux is:
    1. its free
    2. you can choose from over 1000+ distros for a version that suits you
    3. If you want to use a program they are all listed in synaptic manager every driver/codec or you just write one yourself
    4. depending on the distro you can get push your hardware further with linux like my laptop is 4 years old with 512mb of ram it wouldn't have a hope in hell of using vista to a smooth level but ubuntu with a touch of beryl and wow my laptop looks like it is running the aero interface
    5. did I mention its free.....

(dvd{styler, rip, imagecmp, backup, author}, lives, transcode, etc), and yea no gaming either (Doom3, Unreal Tournament*, Neverwinternights, ppracer, etc) of course.

Of course I too would find something I've never used before 'useless'. This might be worth taking a glace of.

I can call it useless then , I dual booted with fedora core 4 for a few months and found it wouldn't do anything I wanted to do.

Yeah totally Fresh install of windows is almost as good as fresh sheets on your bed

Also SATA has other features that will make it worthwhile (a bit). You can monitor the temperature of the disk from windows (I think thats due to S.M.A.R.T, but some IDE's dont support that and most SATA's do I think). And I also prefer the connectors. Those old IDE cables could be a bit awkward to get on and off. Especially if you had to do it semi-regularly. The SATA cables are like lego.

DoD yes, Photoshop might, might not, it will with virtualisation, but the GIMP is a better free alternative anyway, Oblivion, yes.

That's because you used Fedora Core 4 for a any period of time, use Fedora 7 (released in at the end of the month), Debian, Gentoo, Ubuntu, etc. Fedora particularly is rather anal about patient infringing components, Debian is almost as bad, Ubuntu is more for the trivial user (such as yourself).

My laptop I'll be happy running on linux, but my main needs to be very compatible. I got ubuntu free through the post on thursday and plan on installing on my laptop this weekend. It's just not good enough for my main PC.

I can't be bothered faffing about to get stuff working on linux that just works on windows.

Months? I wouldn't say that was a short time.

Perhaps I should have installed ubuntu on my old system before chucking it.

how could you not find the program you wanted....... use the sysnaptic manager and type in search or research on web and if you find atleast someone mentioning the name of the program you think will suit you i.e. wine (windows emulator)

type that in the command terminal and it will download and install the program using your background internet bandwith so it will slow down so not to annoy you whilst you carry on surfing the web. windows doesn't do this its either full bandwith or 1% for you and 99% for download
    sudo apt-get install wine

Nothing 'just works' in windows, that's an illousion, simply 'installing' software is a workaround hack due to the fact that the OS has no package manager.

Perhaps you should, a few months hardly makes you a seasoned linux user, it just about makes you a 'noob' actually.

everything just works on linux any program you need if mainstream you can find in one place through the synaptic manager. when you install ubuntu download beryl visualiser by using this command in the terminal:

    sudo apt-get install beryl

or just type it into the synaptic manager and wow would you look at that everything available including the development files so you can edit it to your needs as that is what linux is designed for

I have got ubuntu installed onto my laptop. I don't think it'll replace windows for my main setup, but I might keep it on here.

I just need to change from the very annoying default font. How do you do that?
