Well if the machine is solid at 5-5-5-16, there's no harm in trying to lower the RAM to spec. BTW it seems that you have upped the voltage to the CPU. Are you OC'ing it?

I haven't upped the voltage to the CPU or done any OCing, as I don't really know what I'm doing! I want to do some OC'ing though....
Looking in Everest, my RAM has a couple of enhanced performance profiles, one for 2.1v with timings of 4-4-4-13 so I could try setting these. I just don't want to kill the machine now that it seems a bit more stable
ok, I set the RAM to +0.3v and set the timings to 4-4-4-13, everything seems ok....
i'm gonna see how it goes over the next week or so and then, after reading some guides, try a bit of OC
Thanks for your help everyone, much appreciated =)
I wouldn't overclock it just yet. Be happy it's working for now. Run some bechmarks and get a feel for stock performance and stability. Monitor the temps and enjoy it for what it is then when your ready come back and folks at hexus will no doubt help you overclock it.
Absolutely no rush imo since it's probably already 10x faster than whatever it replaced.
I'll get hold of core temp and see how things go before making any more changes
yeah, I upgraded from an Athlon XP 3200+, so the new rig is better, although in some ways I think I was expecting a bit more what with going from 1 core to 4 and a faster FSB and RAM...
I don't think my clockspeed is much higher on the new CPU and I've gone down a gig in RAM, although I was only using PC2700, but overall I guess it is noticably quicker
Also I may need to improve my cooling before OCing, I've got two 120mm case fans (front and rear) but there's no space for any more. My cpu cooler is the 3d Rocket pro which is ok I guess. Do you think this will be enough for a little OCing?
OMG! The same problem has come back again! The machine was fine all day yesterday after pusing the RAM voltage up to +0.3v and lowering the timings, then today when I switch the machine on after it has been of all night it hung again on 'MEMORY TE' :(
Shall I keep pushing the RAM voltage up until stops or is there something wrong here...?
I'd say that you have 3 possibilities:
1. Your RAM is a little dodgy (unlikely if the same thing happens with single stick for both);
2. Your mobo is a little dodgy (possible - I've had one that ran voltages out of spec before); or
3. Your mobo and RAM don't get along.
Best way to check is swap the RAM with another compatible PC and see which system, if either, displays the problem.
Thanks dude, I might see if ebuyer will swap the RAM for me as I don't have any other systems to test it on....
My Everest doesn't (Ultimate 4.00.976). Every other bloody thing you could think of, but not DRAM voltage. What version do you have? Might be a chipset thing though.
I have the same version, but only the trial, must be the chipset...
RAM update
Got 2Gb of Corsair XMS2 6400 DDR this morning so installed this in the mobo, set the BIOS RAM settings to auto/normal and then got exactly the same problem as before :(
Have now set timings to 4-4-4-12 and voltage to 2.02v but I don't think this will fix it as when the machine restarted after I changed the RAM settings the initial BIOS screen hung for a split second on 'MEMORY TE' before the rest ('ST 20xxxxxxxx OK') came up. After the machine has been off for longer than a couple of minutes I think it will hapen again.
The corsair memory is actualy on the memory compatibility list for the mobo and it's two whole new sticks so the chances of the new memory just being faulty as well must be pretty slim. It must be the mobo at fault then right?
After two pleasent emails and one nasty one to the ebay shop I got the board from I managed to evoke a brief response from them regarding replacing the mobo. They haven't made any promises and say they are going to speak to gigabyte about it but I guess its a start.
Yep, after machine had been switched off for 15 mins I switched it back on and it hung...
I don't know that I'd ever buy electronic hardware from Ebay unless it was dirt cheap. Motherboards are the most delicate bits of equipment in my experience and I would always want rock solid support (i.e. a good RMA system) from whomever I bought one.
I'm trying to get a refund, then I will buy the same mobo from scan or somewhere reputable. As the mobo was overpriced on ebay, I might even be able to get a slightly better board like the ga-p35-dq6, do you think this would be a good idea? Would the corsair memory I got be supported?
As long as the mobo supports DDR2 then you will be OK. Some P35 boards support DDR3. Some support both memories, but I wouldn't suggest getting one of those. The DQ6 supports DDR2, so that would be OK. Most people here prefer the ASUS or ABit boards, but the Gigabyte is fine too.
