Hi Nightshadow i have one of those Samsung drives and it's fine for me..anyway I also have a Western Digital WD2500KS which is good too..(runs warmer than Samsung)..spoilt for choice in the disk department.

Hahaha, coincidence or what?!
Thanks Roo, much appreciated. Keep 'em coming!
I`ve had one of those samsung 500GB ones for around a month now, no problems with it.
i dont know if this is just mine however but it randomly bleeps at me. my maxtor HDD doesn't do this. odd. but no mate, no problems to report after a month of having my one.

Get the Western Digital AAKS version.. you havn't errr heard silent until you've had one

Most of the noise associated with drives these days is to do with the case they are in. I don't think you can go wrong with the Samsung, WD, HGST and Seagate drives at @ £60 for the 500gb models.
I just bought a T7K500 500gb Hitachi model and there is a small amount of noise now and again when searching but my Gigabyte Aurora case is a bit thin in the hard drive section and uses those hard drive cage mounts rather than screws. It is audible when writing to the disk for a period of time but otherwise I don't notice it even after quieting the chipset and lawnmower x1800xt cooler.

Just a note regarding drive recommendations:
A friend of mine recently picked up a couple of Seagate drives and, unfortunately, they came with the AAK firmware (noted for performance issues) and they make horrible clicking sounds. My Seagates use the AAE firmware and are pretty quite. Both sets of drives are from the same family (7200.10) but it seems it does not guarantee that they'll actually be the same. Since you cannot specify which firmware version you'll receive, it makes it a lot more difficult to recommend a drive.

WD 500GB AAKS - excellent HDDs, fast and quiet...

Samsung HD501LJ are excellent choice........ I have 4 of them and they came top in Custom PC Labs test.
Try to make each and every day the best it can be.

I have 2 500GB HD501LJs and I have 0 problems at all - but then they are mounted in an Antec P180b case, which has rubber grommets for dampening.
I read tons of reviews and user postings of drives before buying them and it was either them or WD 5000AAKS drives, in the end there was a great deal on these so I bought them and have no regrets. And didn't read any problems with vibration by anyone, so I say just go for it (them)!

Either the Western Digital AAKS or the Samsung SpinPoint are both great drives, just do yourself a favour and avoid anything made by Maxtor.
