Why not ask us what to get, the XMS4000 ram is Over the top in my opinion, and it doesn't make sense getting the leadtek board when the abit nforce 2 board is better.

As you've spent all that money, i suppose you better try and make use of it and buy a 1700xp or a 2500xp barton and try and overclock it to get some decent fsb going to make use of that memory.

I thought the 2500's were very bad overclockers tho ??

Not the later ones, they have been reaching 2.4Ghz above.

Sounds good mate. If you can get one of the later ones then and the extra cash isnt a prob go for a barton cos of the extra cache etc it will be faster. Dont know if it would be difficult to clock a barton but i know that the 1700's are easy to get a lot out of cos im a n00b

Dabs do the XP1700+ for around £35 although they don't guarantee TbredB that's what they should be. All TbredB should yield at least XP2600+ speeds, 400FSB with ease and many get 2.2ghz+ out of them. As mentioned if you get TbredB look to an XP1700+ or XP1800+ and o/c as the 9 layer, 0.13mu design is easily capable of over 2.0ghz every time. Like the Barton ALL TbredB are unlocked so o/c'ing is as easy as your mobo allows.

Barton are roughly 3-5% faster clock for clock and the XP2500+ is only about £65 now too. Again even a poor o/c'ing XP2500+ should hit 2.0ghz which is still a significant speed boost. Due to the XP2500+ being clocked at 1.8ghz stock you don't get the almost certain speed boost that you get from TbredB and being the slowest Barton chip does mean any sucky CPUs will end up labelled as one. Chances are still very good that it will do XP3200+ speed though, that's 2.1ghz with 400FSB and many do better!

Do rem that you are only guaranteed stock perf from your CPU and o/c'ing voids the warranty (esp with voltage tweaks). If you buy the lower end CPUs you don't lose much at all if your CPU dies or fails to o/c well so that bodes well. Be sure to get some decent compound and a good HSF (Volcano 11?) too. Finally be careful about mobo choice as some budget mobos even lack multiplier adjustment so pick your CPU carefully if that's the case. Finally there are many mobos which can't understand the 5th FID bit so you may be limited to 12.5x max or stuck at stock mult if it's higher, shouldn't be too limiting as most modern mobos can do 333FSB as std and 380FSB o/c or 400FSB (nF2/KT600) so a lower mult doesn;t hold you back.

If you want a good overclocking XP1700+ look at cpucity.co.uk
Generally most their chips are of good quality for clocking

    /me pats the JIUHB DLT3C
(i've got to bind those codes to an F key or something )

You said you dont mind the $ for a nice CPU, so get a barton 3000+
You got top end ram and an Nforce2 400 Ultra
I know you're not in the US, but.... 333Mhz FSB 3000+ <- just for reference 400Mhz FSB 3000+

I think the main point is that almost any TbredB (even XP1700+) can achieve 400FSB and 2.1ghz (XP3000+ type speed) while almost any Barton (even XP2500+) can achieve 400FSB and 2.1ghz (XP3200+ speed) and that's without OTT cooling or truly over-volting. So the only point in getting the faster rated TbredB or Barton is for guaranteed minimum perf or if you're terrified to o/c. Basicly the 9 layer design on a 0.13mu process of the TbredB and Barton is almost alawys capable of 2.1ghz & 400FSB, AMD simply supply lower clocked versions since the demand for budget chips is there and so they can charge the extra for the certified chips.

EDIT: Did I miss a news flash or something? Last time I looked...

    BARTON ATHLONXP (all 166/333FSB)
    AthlonXP2500+ @ 1.83ghz 11x
    AthlonXP2800+ @ 2.08ghz 12.5x (note there's a TbredB with exactly the same name)
    AthlonXP3000+ @ 2.16ghz 13x
    AthlonXP3200+ @ 2.10ghz 11x (200/400FSB)

Did AMD realise just how unrealistic the original XP3200+ rating was for the Barton @ 2.10ghz & 400FSB?
