Re: Samsung spinpoint or Western Digital HDD?

Well both of the mentioned HDD's are the same price with today only. LOL.

Hmmmm. After the mentioning of the "newer" AAKS's being louder, I think I will opt for a samsung t166 drive.....Im pretty sure

But can anyone confirm the AAKS's are louder? As my current one is pretty much inaudible

And it will be used for storage and not OS/app's.

For storage, you are not likely going to notice the difference - I'd give the T166 a chance. Even last year, I was mostly preferring WD/Hitachi because they were the quickest. But after snapping two T166 for under 100 (for both), i find that it does what it was bought for well (storage). Frankly speaking, you probably wouldn't notice the difference even for OS/App use unless you are like to time how quickly it takes to (un)compress/encode something. Having said that, I do have my eye on the 320GB platter AAKS for my next system drive.

Don't know what classifies as lnewer (mine's ~3 month old), but mine it completely and utterly silent. I don't mean quiet, I mean silent. Lian-Li A70B with rubber HDD mounts and 7x Noctua 1200s at 7v for reference.

About to smash that near silence with a couple of Raptors mind.

I can find out the specific submodels on the AAKS I have if that would help everyone? My first was bought in September 07, second in Jan 08.

    Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB SATA II 7200RPM 16MB Cache

I have had 9 of these first bought around May 07, nice drives, but the last couple

Ebuyer OCT 2007/Feb 08 have had severe resonating, the Feb drive sitting on desk, on rubber still resonates badly, not sure if this is grounds for rma, but it sure is a pain, also I have had 2 previous(not wd) that had the same sound problem, they both developed bad sectors over a period of time
