OC a Q6600 on an Anot IN9 32X

Hiya Folks

I'm a newbie to OC'ing a CPU and was wandering if any of you folk were kind enough to tell me what settings I need to change on the BIOS to get my CPU to 3ghz.

I tried just changing the FSB to 1333 on BIOS but bootup leads to BSOD
I left all other settings on auto

My rig consists of the following

Q6600
Abit IN9 32X
4GB DDR2 6400 Corsiar (4 x 1GB)
Asus 8800GTX
Enermax Infinity 720W PSU
WD Raptor 150GB System Drive

Probably need a bit of extra voltage in the cpu.. not too much.

Also I dont think you can go higher than 3.0ghz on that board.

Did you look at the RAM voltage/multiplier like I told you on the ABit forum?

Aye, Thanks Thorsson, did that and at least I didnt get BSOD, just 3Dmark 06 wont run past the first test. hehe

Also you need to get your CPU temps. Core Temp or Everest give you accurate readings. Intel TAT does too I think. Most other measures use the BIOS reading, which is an external measure and tends to understate the temp in the cores by 10-15C.

Best way to test CPU load is to get Orthos. You'll need to run 2 instances to get all 4 cores running. If the temps go above 70 then it's too hot (IMO, they're supposedly safe to run hotter).

Thats because the CPU is 1066mhz.

Sorry but thats simply not true to says its going to read 10-15 degrees under.

I have used Everest and its the right temperature. I know this as i had it tested using probes from my last job.

I said "most other measures". Everest gets it right. You seem a little confused about this, as we saw in the other thread, so you should quit while you're behind.

LOL. Most other measures mean uGuru, speedfan etc. They take their only measure from the BIOS, which uses an external thermal diode on the motherboard to take the reading. CoreTemp and Everest take the reading from the CPU itself, which was explained to you in the other thread. These readings come from each core, and these are what are 10-15C higher than the BIOS reading. Have you got it now?

Ive got the fact that Uguru and Everest read indentically so your 'theory' is wrong.

Speedfan and Coretemp though are subject to what you say.

uGuru reads from the on-die sensor (new Intel CPUs have 2 types of sensor - ones in the cores & 1 on-die between them).

OK, thanks, I don't use the buggy PoS any more. But the main point was it doesn't read the cores. It certainly was showing a far lower temp on my PC than Everest was showing the cores to be at.

Personally I find it perfectly usable (it's not perfect but what is?) & imo given it's use for fan control it makes sense that it uses the on-die sensor rather than the individual core sensors.

Thanks M8, TBH.....

Will probably just flash the MOBO and get a Wolfdale 8400 or 8500, I can get them for £160/£200

Anybody has experience of using 45nm CPU's on 680 boards? Abit reckons it can be done if you update the BIOS to version 14. Not so sure myself

Madness to pay £160 for a 8400.

Get yourself a Q6600 for at least £20 less.

You may be having problems with 4 sticks of RAM. not all motherboards are completely happy with them.

Try taking two out, so you just have 2 left. Then set FSB to 1333, make sure mem multiplier isn't running your memory more than the 800 it should be at. Add 0.1V to mem and CPU and give it a whirl
