Lightweight laptop

Can anyone recommend me a decent lightweight laptop, something less than about 2kg if possible (doesn't need optical drive built in).

I've got a couple of SONY Vaio ones here at work which are great but a bit on the expensive side, are there any similar ones by other companies that you'd recommend?

DELL do a light version of the Latitude ... my dads been after one but got given a high power Centrino thing instead (he only does office work on his laptop so wanted a light low power jobbie)!

Yeah, go for the Dell the X300 or D400 Latitude's are pretty cool, been looking at them myself, but with other things going on, are just too much money atm. But yeah Dell's are always a safe bet, imo, they offer the best warranty on the market, I mean international next business day on site engineer is pretty damn good!

But Dell and Sony are at the expensive end, however I find that you get what you pay for, I've still got my Song Vaio X9, being used as an net server atm, still going strong after well ove 3 years of pretty much constant use. My mum has a Dell laptop and it's great, go for Dell, we ordered and had our grubby mitts on it within a week, that't not bad service either!

I'd agree on the Latitudes; our standard laptop issue is the D600 - Pentium-M based (can be Centrino, doesn't have to be, better if it isn't - use the TrueMobile 1300 b/g wireless card instead of the Intel one) and they're actually very portable despite having a 14" screen, although probably too heavy for you weighing in at at about 2.2 - 2.35 kilos depending on whether you're using a CD drive or not. I'd also say that for the quality of machine, with the warranty cover available, the Lats are VERY competitively priced. I'd also say - get the three years accidental damage cover if you intend to be out and about with it. On power consumption, with the second optional battery in the drive bay, our guys get 6+ hours of continuous use.

yeah battery life is amazing these days (god I sound old), with ours we're getting about 4 hours batter life, bit more if we are careful... Amazing...

No, I'm the IT Manager for a construction and civil engineering group, so we have a lot of mobile users, the vast majority on Dell machines. We issue the D600 with a 1.4GHz P-M, 30GB hard disk, DVD/CDRW, 256MB RAM, 14.1" 1400x1050 display, drive bay battery, XP Pro, Bluetooth and 802.11b/g wireless (hence no Centrino label). Rock solid little machines and pretty popular with the staff as well.

Looks a good spec; Asus make good chassis, and the mag alloy construction should make it relatively rugged. Price is good; I'd guess it's a one year warranty, but you might feel that's enough.

Yeah, 1 year warranty would probably do fine.

I can't tell if that's actually a picture of the laptop or just a generic one?
