Want to start overclocking but not sure which Ram.

    Hi there,

I'm interested in overclocking and am a total newbie. Am thinking of putting together a Q6600 on a gigabyte x38 motherboard or the Asus maximus extreme. I am at a loss at which RAM to use as there are so may varieties and speeds. My operating system is Ultimate 32bit.

    Thanks.

Any particular reason for the X38? You will get the same performance out of the CPU with a P35 motherboard
    Abit IP35 PRO

    As for ram -

    2GB Corsair
    4GB Corsair

For a Q6600 any PC6400 should do the trick. Given how cheap it is get one with a lifetime warranty.

Re: Want to start overclocking but not sure which Ram.

I thought the x38 was the new and upcoming chipset for overclocking. Am quite happy to go for the P35 if I will get similar results as they are far cheaper.

Will check oot the Corsair 4gb.

Would there be any advantage in going for 1066 Ram?

Only if you are extreme cooling. PC6400 will get you to 3.6GHz without OC. Of course if you're going to upgrade the CPU again in a few months, then go for it.

Thanks for the advice folks, very helpful.

Just out of interest Biscuit is there any reason I shouldn't get the X38 chipset, as I have seen the GIGABYTE GAEX38-DS5 SK775 DDR2 PCX for around 100 pounds here in spain where I live.

    Thanks again folks.

I didnt know whether to get a IP35 Pro or a QUadGT. Went for the X38 board as although the Pro is decent, for £100+ its very poor value.

The X38 is rock solid stable aswell so im glad i made the choice.

THe Dark Raider etc are decent for budget boards though.

    Absolutely no reason at all.
It will do all the P35's do and a little more.

Well the main reasons i was saying the P35 chipset over the X38 is that its usually cheaper and the X38 is mainly DDR3, especially the maxium extreme. DDR3 ram is much more expensive than DDR2 and the gains seem to be fairly minimal at the moment.

That gigabyte board seems like a bit of a bargain though
