EVGA 8800GTS £86.94 on today only

This looks like a good deal:

Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

    on today only for £86.94

It's only 256Mb but as I'm only gaming at 1280 x 1024 I wonder if it will suffice for now. The 512Mb version is over twice the price (Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK) and apart from the memory doesn't seem any better. Or am I wrong?

Are there any other reasons to go for the 512Mb (or higher) version over the 256Mb version?

    DOH!

Can't believe I missed that! I saw the offer and got over excited. Good job I posted here BEFORE clicking "Buy"!

OK so stupidity aside, I'm looking for an 8800GTS - is there much difference between 256, 320 and 512Mb versions aside from amount of memory? Would 256/320Mb suffice for gaming at 1280x1024?

Re: EVGA 8800GTS £86.94 on today only

    I don't think there is a 256mb version.

The older 320/640mb versions (which i have) are enough to game at 1680 x 1050 quite happily.

It depends on your budget really. If you are in the £100 bracket then I'd be looking at the very cheap 8800GT's the 9600GT and the ATi HD3850 pro 512mb (which can be had for about £90)

That said most new cards at £60 or above are happy at 1280 x 1024 if you are on a low budget.

I find that is usually the case! I was typing a post here this morning to ask for advice about something I was going to buy, and before I even finished typing it, I realised I could do something that would cost me nothing

So I didn't submit the post and didn't buy the item Saved me 50 quid...

And back on topic, I read that the 320 does a great job at resolutions like yours. I'd only get more if you think you will upgrade in the future and need a higher resolution. The 8800GT is a card worth looking at as well though. I can't remember which is best... but shouldn't be hard to find out.

the 8800GT is best up till 1680x1050, at which point, the 8800GTS 512 starts to be the better card

Re: EVGA 8800GTS £86.94 on today only

I don't buy graphics cards very often (my current GeForce 6600GT is testament to that!) so want to get something that is more than capable. I intend to keep my dual 19" TFT setup for a good while longer but don't rule out the possibility of going widescreen in future. I also plan on getting a waterblock for the card and have (almost) decided that I'd rather go for a GTS than a GT. The GTS apparantly run fairly cool (certainly compared with a GTX) and so I think a GTS is the right choice for me. I'd like to be able to play Supreme Commander (current PC can't cope) as it takes advantage of dual 19" screens. This will be a greater test for the card as 2 x 1280x1024 should give it something to contend with! I only wish more games would support dual monitors - although this would probably make me want a 9800GTX!

More and more games will support dual monitors in the future. I can't wait to see what cool things they can do with them, aside from using the second monitor as a map or whatever.

if i was you id look for a bfg 8800GTX 756mb, more memory the better for higher res etc can be had for fairly cheap now adays . Other than that for sup com the 8800GTS should be fine, my plays crysis well @ 1680x1050 4xaa and all settings high/very high(xp hack ) and thats at around 30fps.
