It's a great idea. But it's been done before, why do it on hexus when I can already see it on CustomPC? It's just not original.

If this goes ahead (and personally i think its a bad idea), who would be updating it?
If its HEXUS, then would things find there way on there that maybe shouldnt be, ie. Sponsors stuff? Not saying it would but if i was sponsoring a site or paying for advertising then i would want my components on there.
If its the community, how would anyone ever agree what was to be put in.
Who would be the authority on what is good or bad?
How would anyone know they were right or wrong wothout testing every component compared to another?
Sorry, but the Devils Advocacy calls.

Another reason for not doing it is that there are a number of specialist sites that test particlar types of hardware ( LCd panels for example) and then rate and have a best of section. They can do this because they actually test the equipment and post some objective ( as well as subjective results)
All entries here would be fairly subjective and by covering a wide range of components you can't really have a strong depth of information
I for one would prefer to go to the specialist site for information on specific items rather than a forum that claims to cover all types of hardware
If i came here for advice i would rather ask the question and get a good overview (like everyone already gives) rather than have some rig that was an opinion which may be slightly biased.
At the moment, advice is given on what we know and use. If there is a section for recommending a whole unit, then it would never be as in depth.
At least the recommendations we make now are always first hand and totally unbiased. That is definitely the kind of recommendation i would prefer. We all have our preferences but we have nothing to lose or gain by giving the opinion.
Blitz, that sounded like quite a well reasoned and balanced point of view there.
You ok?

System as shown, plus: Microsoft Wireless mobile 4000 mouse and Logitech Illuminated keyboard.
Sennheiser RS160 wireless headphones. Creative Gigaworks T40 SII. My wife. My Hexus Trust
I think as apposed to this idea, we should have a review section where there are links to 5 reviews for each item. (Categorized of course...)
Then it becomes obvious at a glance which products are worth buying for what purpose.
All good ideas but I'm yet to see someone complain that's built a PC on our advice, if they have listened to us of course

My point exactly.
The people that use the components are the best advocates and the worst critics. That kind of advice, no matter how good the tester thinks he/she is, isn't as good as what a first hand user can give to the argument.
Ok, so what is wrong exactly with taking the opinions (and from a discussion it will be quite clear what 1,2,3 components of a particular type stand out from the rest)and bringing it out into the front of a sticky. To be changed at a later date when better stuff appears.
It doesn't have to substitute additional advice if people ask. It's a starting point. All of this user experience you talk about summarised for reference.
If I ask for someone to recommend me a cpu cooler there will be a discussion that will carry on for 3 pages and then there will be several clear winners. Well paste them into a sticky!
Anyway
I'll just have to start a new thread of "help me build a PC" when I get closer.
Tough on mirrors, tough on the causes of mirrors.
Components for what purpose though? Deciding what problem you are trying to solve is the issue.. and if you do define it then you instantly make the solution irrelevant to anyone trying to solve a different problem. And from forum posts it seems that it's very rare that even 3 people are trying to solve the same problem (in choice of components) in the same period of time.
