    Re: Overclocking question

Yeah, it's the Double in Double Data RAM (DDR) that relates to the Memory speed, not the 2 at the end.

    Re: Overclocking question

The 2 is specifically for DRR2 and not DDR because of new technology. Here is the official explanation from wiki: "The key difference between DDR and DDR2 is that in DDR2 the bus is clocked at twice the speed of the memory cells, so four bits of data can be transferred per memory cell cycle. Thus, without speeding up the memory cells themselves, DDR2 can effectively operate at twice the bus speed of DDR."

Therefore for the same bus frequency DDR2 can operate at twice the speed. Therefore in my situation of calculations the 2 is attributed to the second revision of DDR and not DDR itself.

Yes when DDR came out it doubled the speed because of double pumping which is the reason for the name Double Data Rate memory but that has now fallen to the newer technology of DDR2.

and with DDR3 its 8 bits per cycle, but you said that DDR3 uses 3 as a multi over DDR2...(confused)

Yeah I actually just took a guess at that one by using what happened with DDR2 and applying it to the next step... was an educated guess which turned out horribly wrong lol. I have sat down and gone through all the calculations for DDR2 and DDR because at the time of doing my computer course those were the memories being used so I was guessing that a similar system would be used to migrate from DDR2 to DDR3.

    Re: Overclocking question

    Hi Exhail,
I have another question if that alright,
basically i have changed the fsb to 312 making the processor (e6600 2.4) run at 2.8 ghz, the dram is on a ratio of 533 (or 1:1).

This is making the ram (rated at 800mhz) run at only 624mhz (312x2x1), however when i change the dram to 667 making the ram run at 780mhz the whole computer boots up but them starts to freeze up when running XP.

any ideas why this is happening? it should be able to cope with this becuase
before i had started to overclocked the fsb was at 266 but the dram ratio was x1.5 (800).

    thanks

Is it at the correct voltage?

    It's 4.98*

Are you using 4 sticks of memory or is it only 2?

If you are using 4 sticks you'll find you need to increase the motherboards voltage but if your only using 2 sticks the memory voltage should be altered.

I don't need to change the voltage on my IP35-Pro to run 4 sticks.

Might not be the same for every motherboard but I know when I started using 4 sticks of memory I needed to increase my motherboard voltage a little bit. Was recommended to me and it worked but as you don't have to it might be different for other motherboards.

    Hi Exhail,
    i have 2 stick of ram they are corsiar ddr2 6400 xms2

The voltages for the ram i have left on auto, however i have manually put the timings in my self 5-5-5-12.

My motherboard is an asus p5b standard edition.

    Re: Overclocking question

xms2 will not run stable on default voltage, you need to set it to 2.1v

    Re: Overclocking question

how would i change the voltage for the ram?

is this voltage 2.1v higher than the rated/default on auto?

    thanks

at stock speeds 266fsb and ratio of 1.5 (800) why does it work perfectly. are the voltages on auto aswell?

even when i overclock i leave the dram at 533 but dont touch the voltages for the ram at all.

    Re: Overclocking question

if you read the specs on the corsair ddr2 xms you would have seen it has timings above stock that require 2,1v

it will boot with everything on auto to allow you to make the changes, you will need to read the motherboard manaul to find the section on voltages

    defaults 1.9v for ddr2

    Re: Overclocking question

    cheers gonzo,
just tried at 312 fsb with 667dram (x1.25) with the voltages of the ram at 1.9v not stable, tried at 2.0v not stable aswell using prime95.
However at 2.0v & 2.1V the text turns to red.
    I'm assuming thats not good.
Would turning up the volts to 2.1v (max for my mb) damage the ram in any way?

    Re: Overclocking question

thats because stock ddr2 runs at 1.9v and cheap crap may blow at 2.1v

your using corsairs quality stuff thats tested to run faster than stock timings at 2,1v

read the instructions, it should tell you on the box.

you should also try and find a setting to unlink memory and cpu so the ram stays at 800mhz

    Re: Overclocking question

just tried at fsb 312 dram raio 667,
    voltage on ram at 2.1,
    not stable on prime95.

btw i dont have the box for the ram, it didnt come with any instructions!

How would i be able to unlink memory and cpu? its an asus p5b where would the settings be? I think that this would be my best bet

    many thanks
