Hi,
My first post on this forum and it's a plea for help!
My computer (specs below if it's any help) decided to die on me today; it's done this a couple of times during this heatwave, but up until now it's been fine when I turned it back on. Not today - *nothing* happens when I hit the power switch. The other difference today was I got a faint squelchy pop, which I never had before.
The monitor and my hi-fi run off the same extension strip and they both have power going to them; I've also tried switching the power cords round with no effect. So I'm guessing it's the power supply? Is there any chance it could be anything else?
Assuming it is the power supply, I'd like to take the opportunity to get a new case along with it, as the one I have is cheap-as-chips and I'm worried about the temperature inside. (The power supply has always run very, very hot - I nearly burnt myself when I touched the fan cage at the back - and the hard disk isn't much better. There also don't seem to be any places to install fans). So any recommendations people have would be much appreciated! I'm not interested in overclocking, just in having a sufficiently cooled system, and a big enough case to cram in another hard drive or so. I've been tempted by the Coolermaster Centurion; could I get away with something cheaper?
The specs are 1.4GHz Athlon, 256MB DDR RAM, 40GB HDD, and 64MB Geforce 2 Pro, running WinXP Home and a ton of PCI cards (soundcard, modem, NIC and TV card) - so how much power am I looking for on a new PSU?
Cheers in advance for your help,
Gubs
