    possible blown PSU?

    Hi,

My first post on this forum and it's a plea for help!

My computer (specs below if it's any help) decided to die on me today; it's done this a couple of times during this heatwave, but up until now it's been fine when I turned it back on. Not today - *nothing* happens when I hit the power switch. The other difference today was I got a faint squelchy pop, which I never had before.

The monitor and my hi-fi run off the same extension strip and they both have power going to them; I've also tried switching the power cords round with no effect. So I'm guessing it's the power supply? Is there any chance it could be anything else?

Assuming it is the power supply, I'd like to take the opportunity to get a new case along with it, as the one I have is cheap-as-chips and I'm worried about the temperature inside. (The power supply has always run very, very hot - I nearly burnt myself when I touched the fan cage at the back - and the hard disk isn't much better. There also don't seem to be any places to install fans). So any recommendations people have would be much appreciated! I'm not interested in overclocking, just in having a sufficiently cooled system, and a big enough case to cram in another hard drive or so. I've been tempted by the Coolermaster Centurion; could I get away with something cheaper?

The specs are 1.4GHz Athlon, 256MB DDR RAM, 40GB HDD, and 64MB Geforce 2 Pro, running WinXP Home and a ton of PCI cards (soundcard, modem, NIC and TV card) - so how much power am I looking for on a new PSU?

Cheers in advance for your help,

    Gubs

find a fan or something that isnt expensive just incase it is broke.

on the mobo connctor theyre will be 20 pins, try to find the green one, it should be in this order
    11 orange
    12 blue
    13 black
    14 green (PS_ON)
    15 black (GROUND/COM)
    16 black
    17 black
    18 white
    19 red
    20 red
i have left out the first 10 pins on the other side as u dont need to know them.
the colours might differ slightly - on my old 230W psu the green pin (PS_ON) is accutally brown.

get a piece of wire or a paper clip or something, preferably insulated exept at the ends and bend it and inset it to short pins 14 and 15. plug the fan into a molex and plug the psu into the mains, it should turn on instanly and stay on untill either its unpluged, switched off on the back (only some have this) unplugged from the wall or the short on p14/15 is removed.

if the fan works ok like this then the psu is not dead.

ive done this earlyer today so that i can run a mini fridge from a spare psu as the one that came with the fridge was too hot and a fire hazzard.
Try that mate. Was suggested in another thread from not-so-long ago.

    need a new case?

    just got this http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=50149

and its ace (when stupid blue piece of plastic is removed from front) the cooling is decent 5x80mm or 4x80mm and a 120mm at the rear. blowhole with an 80mm fan is already there

you will be needing a psu tho. Surely your current one has popped

not sure about if they also do this for heavy cases but kustompcs have standard shipping w. interlink iirc, which only costs £2.13 for any weight

Thanks for the replies. The Superflower case looks like a bargain; you say the coloured plastic bit comes off? What colour is the rest of the case (ie. am I going to have to look at stealthing my beige optical drives?)

Also I see ebuyer are offering a deal with a 350W Antec PSU with that case. Is 350W going to be enough to power my system? (Apologies for knowing so little about this sort of thing...)

The kustompc cases look really nice but being a student I'm not sure I can justify more money Hopefully in the next year or so I should be able to afford to upgrade bigtime, and put it all in an awesome case...

Thanks again for all the help.

the rest of the case is white apart from the perspex windows. The 350w antec will be more than enough to power your system in fact it would do nicely for mine (see sig) whish i had got that now.

EDIT: just had a look surely thats the best psu for this case mate
