The cache makes very little difference to everyday applications but games take an average 10% hit.
Thats a 10% hit when using a low resolution of 1024x768 though, which they use to test the CPU specifically.

Most PC gamers are at much higher resolutions, where the vga card is the defining hardware and CPU cache only makes a 1-2% difference in fps. The amount of cache between two c2d CPUs would be a low priority in my decison making.

    I'd go for a Quad Q6600 G0

Its not 45nm but you can get a good overclock out of them and good price performance. The other quads are not really worth looking at if you are overclocking anyway

Also when your favoirate program starts using all 4 cores you will not be left wishing you had bought a quad instead of a dual.

Re: Best Wolfdale and Yorkfield for OC

There's a thread over on another forum today basically saying that the End Of Life Q6600s left for sale now are struggling to even hit 3Ghz with high volts... And here's me ready to splash some cash on a CPU upgrade etc. They're saying that this is pretty normal for Intel - drop the performance on the EOL chips to basically push the new range.

Thing is though, the best price on a Q9550 today (on pre-order for the 11th August 08) is about £230 - way more than a Q6600 costs. Thoughts, anyone? Is this just FUD to encourage sales? Thing is though it's normal users reporting the problems so I'd doubt it

Thats not good news if its true. I bought my Q6600 last month and its at 3.2 on stock.

The CPUs in the UK are most likey a bit older than ones in the USA or similar so if the reports are coming from there you will have a bit longer

I would say if it is correct you could try look for the pervious stepping but I'm not sure how it compairs

Not good news then. I got my one from here

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/131823...w_order_by=RUF

    Which was OEM.

But this is the problem with overclocking, you are running out spec so nothing is guaranteed

You pays your money and you takes your chances, I suppose I think I'll still stick to buying a Q6600 until Nehalem (now named officially as i7) is affordable next year. To be fair even on stock a Q6600 G0 will still blow away my current socket 939 Athlon 64 X2 4200!

I don't think I'll be disappointed either way really.

Hi, what's the situation on this at the current date now?

I'm really in need of a build asap, I will start ordering this weekend as then I have the weekdays next week to handle deliveries.
