My broadband speed - 750 Meganibbles/minute
I've got one of these:

seems pretty good. transfering at about 20MB/sec right now in Vista using a 250GB WD drive. Others might be faster, but I can't complain at about £5
Ignore any other suggestions and get an Enermax Jazz. Ultra-cool (both in looks and temperatures - it has a mesh grid on top so that heat can escape very easily), no overheating components on the usb-sata bridge, very cheap, works fine on my SATA HD with just the USB cable providing the power.
I've been through two external 2.5" enclosures, one Jou-Jye and another from span.com, they're both crap compared to the Enermax, especially the Jou-Jye - it had a voltage regulator on it which got extremely hot and made the entire thing get uncomfortably hot.
I did get my Jazz from Scan, but I can only see IDE versions on their web site right now.
Well the Sumvision that has been plugged in all night is barely warm to the touch, and i think thats from the HDD itself not a voltage regulator.
I've had half a dozen different 2.5" enclosures over the years and never had a problem with heat. Every one of them has been powered off a single USB port too.
What about drive capacities? I have a 250g 2.5 Sata drive to go in one.
I don't think you have to worry about it with SATA.
I don't know what the maximum SATA drive size is, but it will be way, way higher than anything out there at the moment. 2.5" and 3.5" drives and SATA -> USB bridges will use the exact same spec.
I personally prefer AC powered external enclosures, but they're more expensive of course.
@ £3.99 + £3.99 P&P, this USB powered Nexons kit is a decent alternative to that Sumvision enclosure from Scan:
Thanks guys. Too much choice now!! lol
