Ordering tomorrow, going for this one:

    http://scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=648903

The others I had my eye on have gone out of stock, otherwise I'd be going for the 80GB Seagate with 5 year warranty. Three years from Western Digital is still good though.

    This is the selection.

    OK help!!

Installed HDD into laptop, all went smoothly.

On startup, inserted Win XP CD but message said "HDD HARD Error, press F1 to continue".

Then at end of the blue screen windows setup it said there was no Hard Drive detected/installed. Said to make sure manufacturer drivers are installed (but nothing provided by Scan).

Then, upon restart, went into windows setup and it now says:

File SETUPREG.HIV could not be loaded.
    The error code is 47872
Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit.
I do hope this isn't a broken HDD... help please!!

UPDATE - There was a black extension clip on the old hdd, didn't notice that had to be fitted onto the new drive, windows is setting up now, phew!!!!

setupreg.hiv is a registry setup file located in the i386 folder on the install CD or DVD - so this could refer to a problem on the CD.

Dell also use OEM versions of hard drives - although made by a specific mfr, they are made for Dell and may (only may - I don't know) have some code that enables them to only work with Dell hardware, or the other way round. That said, I have changed a hard drive on a Dell machine before.

There is a lot of info on Google if you ust eneter setupreg.hiv as a search term, but this one might be useful (although I guess your laptop only has on CD/DVD ROM drive...
