    quick cooling question

hi, as you may of read in my post abit below, last night i broke 1 of the blades off my cpu fan and it now sounds like a plane taking off.
so what i've done is underclock my cpu to 500mhz at 1.25v and taken the fan off, the cpu is now running at 36c after 10mins will it be safe to leave the fan off for a week or 2 until i get a repllacement from ebuyer?
    thanks.

oh and how can i cool the southbridge on my nf7-s ver2?

    thanks

I wouldn't use a CPU without a heatsink and fan - not worth the risk.

hi, i've just ram 3dmark01 twice and the temp is only at 43C so i think if i keep an eye on it it should be ok, as it is only at 1.25volts, going to try and get it down to 1.2 volts now. and i'm going to set the shutdown temp to 55-60C

Set it to automatically power down at 60C and you'll be fine. Lots of people run with a passive heatsink for silence!

Aslong as the temperatures remain acceptable then it'll be fine, i wouldn't do anything demanding though because without the fan the temperature will probably rise quickly and consistantly and fail to come down as fast as it would with a fan attached.

In regards to your northbridge, why not cut up the heatsink you're replacing to a size suitable and use that, alternatively there're two other options i'd consider.

The first from: Vantec which also comes in copper. Both come with passive sinks that would be perfect for the southbridge and that i use myself.

    The second from: Zalman

To attach them i'd use a form of double sided thermal tape, there's a site that offers free samples all you need do is pretend you have a business. If i find the link i'll post it and if i don't i'm sure somebody else will after reading this request.

thanks for that, i've now got it at 1.1volts and it seems stable, i'm only going to be useing it for word, net and downloading no games until i get a new cooler. it's the southbridge that needs cooling, the northbridge has got a abit fan on it allready.
i'll try to cut up the heatsink i've alltready got, but won't i need a dremmil type tool?
it is very quite now, much better than before

As mentioned the Vantec cooler comes with two additional passive coolers that were designed for the southbridge and the Zalman passive cooler fits the southbridge just fine aswell.

I'd just use a normal saw as the heatsink is probably aluminium (right?) and it's very soft, afterward i'd file it down on the cut edges and maybe sand it down a little bit and polish it to finish off.

here's the link i mentioned in my last post: http://www.chomericstest.com/

yeah it is aluminium so it should be quite easy, should it put some paste on it aswell as i shoulud have some left from putting it on my new cpu cooler.

will it lower the temps by much do you think? as right now it burns allmost when you touch it

thanks for the link but they don't seem to be giving samples away

I use the one of the two vantec southbridge sinks that are included when you buy the northbridge cooler, it's warm to the touch it'll lower temperatures by a lot i think it's criminal that motherboard manufacturers even have the cheek to ship boards using the nForce2 chipset without a cooler on the south, it's just needed there's no other word for it.

About the tape, i guess they realised people were abusing it and decided to stop sending out samples.
