Boo hoo I busted my motherboard

Been having some errors on one of my PCs of late, with it losing time & date and sometimes not booting. I swapped the CMOS battery which seemed to fix it but then last week it started doing it again in earnest.

I RMAd it to scan but they rejected it as apparently a CPU socket pin is bent. So reason for my post is to ask how this can happen bearing in mind the arrows on the CPU and the fairly obvious way to fit a S775 CPU.

Anyone done this or have any ideas how this can happen. Would my PC really run OK for months and then all of a sudden break down ?

Did you have a look at the pins before you sent it? Anyhow even though it may be a 'valid' reason to reject an RMA, I dont think it would be the reason for why you are getting errors.

No I didnt even think to look at the pins. Like I said I only took out the CPU to send it back to Scan and it had been installed since I first bought the board. How can the pin bend ?

I dont think it would be the reason for why you are getting errors.

Exactly my thoughts, I am sure the board has something else wrong with it. Guess I'll never know now as it's on its way back to me and then into the bin......

Uneven pressure from a poorly installed HSF, carelessly catching the socket pins while installing the CPU, or - possibly - it could've been slightly bent / out of line when you installed the CPU and it's bent further over time. The pins on a socket 775 aren't exactly robust or ruggedised, after all - I doubt it takes much pressure to bend them.

if you're losing the time / date, and swapping the CMOS battery temporarily fixed the issues, then I'd suggest that there's a short circuit somewhere that's draining the CMOS battery (and potentially causing no end of other signalling problems!). This could be down to your bent pin, but I don't know anywhere near enough about motherboards to call that a diagnosis.

Well if theyre sending the thing back and it does have a bent pin, this could be the cause of the problem, I would straighten the pin up with something and then re-test the board. If its working then alls well, and if not then your no worse off and you can try sending it back to gigabyte direct?

of course scan could have bent it taking the cpu cover off in a hurry trying to rush the RMA through.

To be honest everyone here praises scan for their brilliant customer service but its not that great, I had to RMA my old P35 board and they refused to take it cos i scratched the back taking the bracket off for my TRUE, it was a pretty arsy reason not to accept it IMO. They even admitted yes it was broken just as I said but basically it was tough luck, over the years I spent a lot of money with them and I was expecting better. Sound like a similar story.

well they can only take back the board if their supplier will take it back off them, if its badly scratched then its not going to happen.

Straighten the pin gently and renew the battery again and see what happens . If the battery runs down again i.e. you are loosing time and date then what that previous chap said about you having a s/c draining the battery is prob correct.

Crap pics but the pin is definitely bent and cant see how to straighten it again as it is now sitting above the level of the other pins.

Just cant see how I could have done that, am always uber-careful fitting CPUs and coolers after breaking a S754 CPU fitting an AC7 back in the day.

Well the pin can't have stretched so must be pulled away from soldered connection underneath. See if you can view rear of socket. p.s. that long since I looked at the underside of a board that I can't remember if the solder connections are visible or not.

These kind of cheap comments are getting very tiresom to be honest Gonzo, I would suggest you get FACTS before you post accusations which are only fueled by your own personal feelings for Scan. It would be nice to see a constuctive post for a change.

Troll I don't think so I post constuctively please feel free to take a look at my posts and then read back on your own that would explain the FACTS.

It was far from constuctive if you can assume we would rush and damage it that way why can't you assume IF this was the case we wouldnt report it ourselves?

There will always be friction like this when people feel unfairly treated (rightly or wrongly). Let's not derail the thread too much.

I can only say that in my opinion the symptoms he sent the board back for are not something I would associate with a bent CPU socket pin. Rather more likely to be an issue with the BIOS/CMOS part of the board.

I can only say good things about Scan, I've never had to RMA anything with them (yet) so I can't comment on their service.

However, I can sympathise with anyone who has problems with RMA's I had many with the incompetent baffoons at Komplett but, that's a story for another thread.

TBH, Tinners I think really there is not much you can do with the board, Maybe wipe your mouth and buy another ?
