Awesome, thanks for all the help everyone has given me and i think i shall be ordering the parts very soon
Just to clarify: by on-board LAN I mean a wired connection (ethernet, CAT5). If you want a wireless connection then a PCI card or USB stick will be required on all but the top-end motherboards (costing a good bit over £100 generally speaking).

i will probably just use a wired connection but i will need a long cable for it to reach my router can you point me in the right direction for one please
If you are going to Scan then a flat ethernet cable NOT a X-Over (cross over) but straight through.
There are others available on the network cables page.
If you don't want cables lying about the place some choose the Homeplug route (no pun intended) using mains copper as the conductor for data but that gets a bit trickier to discuss as not all homeplugs are compatible with various vendors' homeplug routers.
