Ah right, two GTX280s and an 8800GTX. 1000W is ample for that, you could still fit it all in on an 850W, but some headroom is nice. A 1250W enermax will blow your ears off, I'd say Zalman ZM1000-HP.
Remember, PSu calculators usually read about 20-30% too high than what you really need.
yeh they do read to high, but when you take into account cap aging 2 years down the line a 1000w isnt up to the long term job either
How much does capacitor aging really affect things though? I've never seen someone measure it. All I know is that a Corsair HX 1000W can still power a 950W+ PC when it's a year old, as I've seen it. Also don't forget the Thermaltake Toughpower 1500W is actually an identical unit to the Corsair HX 1000W, it just has a sticker with a bigger number on it.

If I ever need over 600 watts to power my system I think I am moving to console gaming or using my computer as the major heating source in the house.

Hey well, I think using an 8800 as a physics card is utter madness, but there you go. Of course I don't even use a physics card because I don't see the point.
why is it madness, i cant sli it with a GT280 and i had it sat collecting dust.
Because it's about 160W of power going to do something that a small handful of games use, and a 20W card could achieve - you could have ebayed it :S
when you pay £300 for something that near worthless 2 years down the line its hard to bring yourself to fleabay it for a few quid when the new cards going to cost the same, at least in dads new pc he will be able to errr drag his outlook window around at high speed.

I have exactly the same thought about my 3 year old X1900XT which was £327 new. it's still powered on as we speak, in my fileserver, and is occasionally used to produce HD video - something a weaker card from that era would not have been able to achieve. You have to remember though, you're spending an extra £40 on the PSU power required to have that in your PC, which is more than half what the card is worth.
the 8800 will be pulled for dads build, i will at some stage be adding in more 280's to selling the water cooled one for a pair of better cards at some stage.
So what do you currently have? If you've only got one GTX280 but were considering another it might be wise to wait until the next generation of cards come out.

i wont put a cheap ass psu in dads pc with the equipment it will be running.
Sorry, bear in mind I often respond to 40+ threads a day across various forum sites. However, from what I can see from the rest of this thread, what I wrote was accurate. You only have one 280 so far and were considering another, at least that's what it looked like you said.
yeh, thing is when you pay near on £500 for a pre water cooled BFG its hard to part with it
the fun part will be waiting for another to come along in the near future.
otherwise i may chop it for something better.

well it did work fine in the old pc, but i think it is suffering from cap ageing as the pc doesnt always POST without hitting the reset button.
so i know it will work fine with the less demanding old pc, so there is no point buying the seasonic.
anyway thanks for the help lads, i will call it quits for this thread now and treat myself to the 1250w when i see it around the £200 mark.
