personally i think a Q6600 @3.6GHz really cant be beat for the price. i mean realistically in games how much frames a second can you get by getting an i7 or a Q9650 at 4GHz? hell even everyday apps, hardly push a 3.6GHz Q6600.

Re: How long do you intend to keep your Q6600 until??

I'm quite tempted to get another cpu as soon as possible as I dabble a bit in folding@home. My Q6600 does ok but would be nice to have a mega fast i7.
As always it's a case of money so it will probably be quite a long time before my "wants" become a reality.

Re: How long do you intend to keep your Q6600 until??

Mines more than enough for what I need, if it gets to the point its not I'll overclock it for a bit, next step for me is SSD, next major upgrade is likely to be board ram and CPU so we'll leave that one for a while...

True but then I like playing with my 64 bit Linux distros. An overclocked core i7 would give huge points with the new massive bonus work units.

Also I only have a 6800GT (at least I think that is what it is hiding under the dust).

Either way money means my Q6600 will still be there for a while.

Just picked up a Q6600 last month, brand new for £75 so I dont plan on getting rid until I can get an equally good bargain on something better.

Re: How long do you intend to keep your Q6600 until??

I'm thinking about going i7 right now given that i5 has been put back to 2010 last I read.

I'll probably jump just before Win7 is released, motherboards and RAM can be had for a nice price now, just the cpu is pricey still

The Core i5 is out next month and already retail samples are cropping up:

Re: How long do you intend to keep your Q6600 until??

Will be sticking with my Q6600 for a good while yet, it works perfectly with windows 7 so it will have to be some amazing software that i use alot to cause me to feel the need for an upgrade.

It's not running full pelt now anyway.

Plus i've only overclocked it to 3Ghz and i know it will do more.

Re: How long do you intend to keep your Q6600 until??

If someone bought a Q6600 and an 8800GTX in the middle 2007 with 4gb of RAM even until the end of this year it would be a decent setup for gaming. 30 months is an eternity when it comes to computers and these parts have done very well indeed with regards to their performance. The 8800GTX is the 9700pro of its generation.

Even so, I dumped my 8800GTX in favour of the 280GTX - the former wasn't capable of running crysis at the res' I wanted..
I'll probably change the 280 before my core system though - and that said the 280 is at stock on water so there's headroom to be had (especially with a full cover block) as and when i actually find something that needs it!
