The Q9550 should easily get upto 3ghz especially with an X48 chipset and probably on stock voltage.

Also before you buy the bits for your build I would check the Sudhian forums which has the biggest Shuttle forum on the internet AFAIK:

    http://www.sudhian.com/index.php?/forums/

Shuttles are picky for RAM(as you may know already) and it maybe worth checking the forums for any known issues with the X48 chipset based Shuttle barebones.

    Re: Which Intel CPU

Tbh it would be embarassing fi you didnt get the Q9550 over 3Ghz on a platform such as the x48.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Yeah had to go through about 4 different sticks before i found the Corsair Value to work the best in this shuttle

    Re: Which Intel CPU

DDR3 isn't worth ANY extra cost. Think of it as the same as DDR2 but with a different number of pins, it's just a mandatory fit to i7s and some AM3 systems.
The Q9550 is an amazing chip, as long as you don't have any motherboard restrictions, you can probably get 3.4Ghz out of it on stock voltage (which means no cooling issues)

    Re: Which Intel CPU

To throw my two peneth in - at the moment I run a E8500 and while I typically game in 1280x1024 I've not had a problem running all the latest games in max/near max detail on my venerable Nvidia 8800. A couple of games are now causing the odd drop in frame-rate and so I'm thinking of going for a 4890 or holding out for the Evergreen cards, but I'm happy with the processor. That said, if I were buying now I would probably go for the Q9550 to try and get a bit more life out of it - but I note budget is limited.

Shameless plug bit - I've got some quality DDR2 RAM for sale in these forums at the moment if you want to save a bit there.

At such a low res, I'm not surprised the 8800GTS keeps up for the most part.

Yeah - it's not ideal. A new monitor is on next year's upgrade list.

Good point - I think the RAM would fit ok, but the airflow fan would not. I could measure the memory height if it is of any use to you without the fan.

If you have dominator RAM, you don't need the fan. The dominator heatsinks cut 30ºC off my RAM from its standard XMS2 predecessors, no fan is required

My SD37P2 had the same issues as it was much more comfortable running 2 sticks of RAM than 4 sticks if you wanted 4gb. Luckiy the Geil Black Dragon RAM worked fine and also runs quite cool.

Try a massively overclocked E7400 at 4ghz you just need a low VID part (otherwise 3.5ghz)

edit: or an AMD phenom II black edition (again overclocked)

    Re: Which Intel CPU

I used to have an E7200 @ 4GHz, it actually felt slow compared to my Q9550. My E8600 @ 4GHz only felt abit slower though.

How about the Pentium E6500K when it comes out? That thing does 6GHz! And it's damn cheap too!
