Hard Drives, which ones are you lot using ?

I was looking inside my PC the other day and realised I have far too many hard drives sitting inside it. I'm currently running 2 x 500 gig WDAAKS drives, a 120 Gig WD Sata, a 200 gig IDE (my current boot drive) and a further 120 gig IDE drive also.

I'm thinking of replacing the lot with a new 1.5 TB drive or 2 x 1TB drives but at the moment am unsure as to which brand to go for. All I know is, I don't want a Seagate !!

What about a Samsung F3 drive or two of them? They have 500GB platters and are very quick.

As above mentioned i have 2x F3 500gb in raid 0 here with 300ish gb boot partition. Very happy with them.

I've also just bought a 500GB Samsung F3, but if Scan had stock of the WD Blacks i would bought one of those also.

Get a SSD - at least as a boot/apps drive, with an F3 for data.

Once you have experienced the SSD difference, there's no going back.

Currently running a Samsung F1 1tb - if F3s are a good price then I'd go for that now.

Currently using 1 x 500 Gb and 1 x 1Tb Samsung as main drives- never had anything wrong. I've never disposed of my old HDs so have 1x60, 2 x 80, 4x120, 1x160Gb,4x200Gb,1x250,1x300,2x320 all lying around.

I've never had to RMA a hard drive yet - and the above are WD/Seagate/Maxtor. Luck I guress

I'm using different sized samsung hard drives 250GB, 500GB, 1TB F1, all work well.

I would say go for the new samsung F3 1TB drive as well.

I've got a WD 320GB (single platter)

Mine's fine and i'm about to add a 1.5tb Samsung or WD for movie storage.

30Gb OCZ Agility as boot drive then a 320Gb and a 250Gb for data/swap/temp stuff.
I've recently moved a load of old storage stuff to my WHS box tho and I'm only using about 40Gb over the 250/320Gb drives so I might grab a 64Gb SSD for my other stuff and spread over the 2..

One thing I have noticed is slow down with the SSD and the mech drives compaired to the SSD on its own, most likely as the SSD is waiting for the swap file and temp folder directories being on slower mech drives..

I'm running 4x 1TB Samsung F1 in Raid 5 as storage, and 2x 500GB WD 5000AAKS in Raid 0 as my system drive. Both have been very reliable drives.

Thanks all, it does seem that the Samsung F3 is the drive to go for so will grab one soon

I did think about SSD but to be honest, I'd like to see the prices of those drop a heck of a lot more first before I grab one.

F2 500g Samsung. Nice and quiet and fast too!

SSD next for me but only when prices fall, by a large amount!

2 WD Caviar Blacks & 2 Sammy F1's & tbh there's naff all to chose between them.

I've got a 1TB WD Caviar Black and am very happy with it.
