    Server build advice.

Right guys, its come to that time in life where i want a server, im sick of having loads of crap on the pc's, ide rather all the films etc be in one place that can be accessed by everybody on the network, seeing as ive never built a server before ide like some advice.

    1. What hardware should i be looking at ? Im hoping its something with low power consumption as its designed to be left on 24/7.

    2. It will need to be able to stream 1080p films.

    3. Storage, a few TB's will be needed !!

Think thats about it tbh !

So ladies and gentlemen, what we looking at ?

Also..it would be awesome if there was a possibility of turning it into a system that could record CCTV, one for the front of the house where the bikes are, and one at the back where the sheds are.

    Re: Server build advice.

I would be looking at an Intel dual core Atom 330 or an Athlon II X2 240e based build with an Nvidia chipset based motherboard.

One pc is on 54g wireless, am i better running that on a decent homeplug setup ? I take it i can just run an ethernet from the router into a homeplug ? Ive never looked at it before tbh.

    Re: Server build advice.

When I had a server we plugged it via an ethernet cable to the wireless router. We could either SSH in from work or connect via wireless to folders. Make sure that the motherboard has gigabit ethernet.

Having thought about the processing power needed you may get away with using a single core Sempron 140.

The reason I specced a Nvidia motherboard is since they have better drivers if you intend to use a Linux based operating system for the server. Of course you could try FreeNAS which is BSD based.

    Rough spec:

    Asus M3N78-VM ~ £49

    AMD Athlon II X2 240e ~ £60

They are in stock at CCL for this price.

    2gb of PC2-8500 DDR2 RAM~ £30

I would add a few of the following hard drives too:

The EcoGreen F2 drives do spin at a slower speed but consume less power and run cooler too AFAIK.

I would get a case with decent ventilation too. I would also look at getting an efficient PSU too such as the following:
