    Re: overclock or upgrade?

I have started to overclock for the first time to improve my system. My default windows 7 cpu score was 5.6 and i now have it to 6.1 which i was quite pleased with. However i would like some advise on the other settings. The system is stable at present. I have added some screen shots with some questions if anyone could advise that would be great.

This is the current setup i have. Stable, but not sure if its correct or i should change otehr settings below.

i have no idea what this does!

Ok i have left the memory as standard but some basic guides state i should increase this, with it being on auto where would be a good setting to try?

Is this something you would change?

Again not sure about this apart from it wont boot on 1.5 lol!!

    As it now stands

    Re: overclock or upgrade?

I reckon you could push the volts up to 1.45 if you are interested in just how far it
could go. I predict 3.2 GHz

    Re: overclock or upgrade?

With a 65nm I'd say 1.5v is safe, not sure if you're mobo allows you to push the voltage that high though.

I'd suggest you to push your voltage to 1.5v if you can and then see what the max stable clock speed is with different combinations of multiplier and FSB. When you reach the max stable clock then you can decrease the voltage by little increments and then see what the highest max stable clock at the lowest voltage is.

    Re: overclock or upgrade?

I would not push it to 1.5v, be safe and stay below 1.45v, would not want to kill it would you

    Re: overclock or upgrade?

Well 65nm processors were "designed" to take up to 1.5v. It's like saying that you shouldn't push a 45nm chip over 1.30v when the max for a 45nm chip is 1.3625v. (And yet most people run 45nm processors at 1.40v). Most things in a pc will die before a CPU does, especially PSUs and motherboards.

However, one thing to always watch is the temperature. This is the important thing to watch when overvolting compnents as it is the main thing that can kill the processor. However, as long as your CPU isn't at load most of the time it should be ok. Your processor should never be above 60 degrees if I remember correctly.

    Re: overclock or upgrade?

are we on about the cpu voltage or the chipset voltage?

the only thing that concerns me is my shuttle psu is only 250w...

i have now set the multiplier to 14 and the FSB to 235 and all is stable at present with the 3ghz

Heat will be the major problem as the ICE unit may not be able to cool the CPU effectively unless you ramp the fan speed up to maximum. Also the rear grill at the back impedes the air flow.
