    q6600 bottleneck

i am thinking of getting an x48 board for my q6600 and getting another hd5770 for crossfire

    would a q6600 at 3.3ghz bottleneck such a system?

or should i upgrade to like i5 and p55?

    Re: q6600 bottleneck

I don't think it will bottleneck it but right now I don't think it's worth going to X48, perhaps a better idea would be to sell off your Q6600 and get a i5 and P55 motherboard as in the future you won't have to get a new board.

But if you can grab an X48 for cheap then go for it but I really doubt you would be able to find it for cheap though.

no, it wouldn't bottleneck the system. the Q6600 is a more than powerful enough CPU to last a couple more years yet.

i can get a 2nd hand i7 920 for £155 and good x58 mobo for abt £115 and 3gb of ram for £40 plus another hd5770 for £110 which comes out to be about £420

while x48 board would cost me £113 and hd5770 for £110 which comes out to be £230

which setup up should i best go for?

i still think the q6600 is a great cpu so i dont know which way to go

    Re: q6600 bottleneck

X48 supports full x16 pci-e lanes so in theory it would be better than the majority of P55 boards - and as mentioned Q6600's are going to be around for a while, i mean its 3 years already

    Re: q6600 bottleneck

As long as you have a nice high FSB (400Mhz+) then the Q6600 is not going to bottleneck gpus for quite a long time. It's the FSB that's the limiting factor on 775 systems especially with big, bandwidth hungry quads

    With Intel's socket stability?

They can't even agree with themselves about current gen. socket standards. Whatever makes you think next gen CPUs will sit in current gen sockets?

Why not sell the 5770, and get a 5850??

You could probably fetch ~£100-£130 for a 5770, and aria have some powercolor 5850's in stock at £240, with dirt 2 free vouture:

I reckon it may bottleneck very minimally. Have you tried unlocking the 240? At 3.7 as a dual core it should be fine, l3 cache and extra cores would definatley not bottleneck at all.

    Re: q6600 bottleneck

Ebuyer have a Foxconn Blackops X48 board for £85 - there's only one left, since I bought the other one. Between that and a decent cooler, you should get your Q6600 to 3.6GHz, and have full Crossfire capability.

Just be aware that chances are, the board will come with an older BIOS revision, which has problems with older C2Q chips - flash to the latest one with a spare dual, and you'll be fine!

    Hope that helps,

    Will

    Re: q6600 bottleneck

why 3.6GHz? that'll give him an FSB of 1600Mhz .

leaving it at stock would probably be sufficient. or maybe overclocking it to 3GHz.

    Re: q6600 bottleneck

The clock speed the CPU runs at (2.4Ghz) is more than capable for gaming purposes, but the speed at which it communicates with the GPU (the FSB) is often the bottleneck so getting as high an FSB as possible is recommended if you have a particularly powerful graphics card. As long as temps and performance is stable it's a good idea to try to at least hit 400Mhz (1600Mhz 'quad-pumped') on the FSB. Most good socket 775 boards could hit 500Mhz stable so as long as you have it at a nice high speed the Q6600 will last you a good while yet

my q6600 is a unstable above 3.3ghz and to achieve 3.6ghz i need to use 1.55volts which heats it up alot....iv seen the blackops but its ddr3 and im not buying ddr3 for something tht cant utilize it...the problem i have is tht my motherboard is half dead so i need to get a new motherboard in anycase

    sounds like a good idea!!!!

because today i tested my athlon II 240 with my hd5770 and with the 240 even at 3.7ghz i lose about 5-7fps compared to q6600 at stock

    would a p5e deluxe hit 500mhz?
