I don't know if any of the newer 500GB hard disks would be a noticeable improvement over the one you have now! I would look at the Samsung F3 500GB and the Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB.

Why do you want to replace it?

The F3 as Cat said - it will be slightly better, but we're talking minuscule differences here.

You could backup your data and try a reformat and see how it goes. Or better yet, save that money till you have enough for a half decent SSD (I recommend the Intel X25-V at around £90) and watch your system fly

i mainly use the pc for gaming, dont think i need a SSD yet it just does not justify itself enough lol. on a side not ive already tryed reformating, after a few weeks it still slows down, i want a new drive anyway....im leaning toward the samsung spinpoint but what is the seagate like?? ive never really owned one

I poured Red Bull into my other system on CAT's suggestion and it didnt so much fly as.... smoke

    (on topic)

I can only echo statements above, that moving from one HD to another will not be noticeable, and an SSD is your best bet if you want tangible speed increases. If you do want a new hard drive - Samsung F3's definitely the way to go

Fair enough, the hanging may not be the disk try some Ram tests and a disk wipe / fresh install, check for overheating / blocked up fans.

It could be an old weak PSU among other things, but if you are going for the disk I have two sammy F3 500Gb disks and they are very quiet and have a single platter design.

I would second that an SSD is a nice upgrade just for a boot drive/OS and a few small applications

Scan have the Intel 40Gb on today only page at a discount now if you want to burn some cash.

    edit

ive just bought the samsung f3 and this enclosure,

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Sumvi...B%29-Enclosure

i need a new enclosure due to my ones fan failing (great excuse to change) so now i have an external enclosure for my old samsung f1 and a new samsung f3...and anouther external 250gb hdd, good times

A 1 TB disk would be better value as it will be only about £15 more with twice the storage.
