    9800 Pro problems :(

Right I've had a tits full of this for 2 nights running now so need some answers.

Story: bought Farcry, played like a dog on my main rig:

    A7N8X DLX
    XP@ 2.2Ghz
    512MB
    GFti 4200 128MB
    XP Pro SP1 DX9b etc

So I reached for the 9800 Pro sitting idle on the shelf (I hate mucking with my main rig so had put off this moment for as long as possible) and installed it. I'm on a modem and had to download all the latest drivers etc v 4.4.

There were atifacts on the screen at desktop (before the drivers) and after the drivers the screen goes to standby part way into booting XP I then tried that driver cleaner thing and cleaned all the nvidia drivers (already uninstalled em) and tried again, exactly the same thing back in goes the GF4.

    Today:

I've built a spare rig for farcry and to test this 9800 pro properly on:

    Enermax 451W PSU
    Abit KD7
    1GB DDR
    XP mobile 1900 @ 1.83Ghz (for starters)
    FRESH XP pro install / SP1 / DX9b

All was well, no artifacts etc on desktop, even managed to install the drivers and reboot back into windows, I then installed farcry and switched to PC off (i had to go out). I come back in tonight hoping to see the 9800 pro work in farcry and it's doing the screen onto standby thing halfway into windows again!

WTF is going on? I assume from some reading that there an issue with nvidia drivers and ATI kit which may explain the atifacts on desktop on the NF2 mobo.... but what's this screen going to standby part way into windows crap?

Is this a know issue with these latest drivers or what? I'm on a modem and can't easily download 20MB sets of drivers to try them all out. Which are KNOWN to work?

I don't know the make of card, as they are all the same AFAIK. I can't return it anywhere as it was secondhand and has been on the shelf for a couple of months.

    Cheers,

    MM

I've had no problems at all with ati kit on nf2's..

Check the card is seated properly, make sure the power connector is solid, a shot in the dark thing to look for is if some goit flashed a 9800 or 9800se to pro then flogged it as a legit 9800pro..

If all that fails then I'd guess you have a faulty card (maybe that's why it was second hand?)..

Aye, looks like it's shafted to me. It decided to run to windows after all now but is corrupted in 3D. I only tested it in DOS mode when I got it just to make sure it wasn't dead and assumed it fine (dumb I know).

I've removed the heatsink and reapplied new goo and even underclocked it on mem and core to see if it made a difference....Nice screenie:

And that's patch v1.1 which does actually fix artifacts in-game? Anyway if it's doing it on the desktop the memory is fubard.

looks like it might be the texture pipeline, perhaps 4 of the 8 pipelines have become damaged.. has seen similiar pictures from forums talking about when modding there video cards to 8 from 4 pipelines they get artifacts.

I had that type of thing with my old GF4 4600, i had red blotches all over the screen instead of red. Couldn't run it propper in any rig, totally sucked. It does sound like someone sold you a dodgy card. Have you run the card in your machine before or didnt you bother until now?

I'd just like to point out that one of my mates had the same problem with his card and he sent it back and it was fine. I know of someone elses 9800 Pro that also gets artifacts. Just RMA and see what happens

It's the card as it makes the same pretty patern on 3d screen savers (flag / ball etc.) I got it with a load of other stuff, I've emailed him this morning, but as I said it's probably a bit late in the day really as I tested it in DOS when I got it just to see it worked and then it's sat around for a couple of months now. So I'm at his mercy, he's obviously tested it the same as me to see that it worked but no further so he's not to blame at all and wouldn't knowingly sell duff kit.

I only started this thread because of the screen going onto standby mode half way into windows all the time, but it's now decided to comply enough to see the card has a problem.

No names will be mentioned as it's between me and him now.

    Cheers,
